Grand Valley State University (Elementary Education)
I have been a certified elementary education teacher in a private school for almost two years now. I currently teach 1st and 2nd grade. As a 1st and 2nd grade teacher I know the importance of developing crucial skills at this age level in math and reading for continued success through all grades in school.
I am committed to building a solid understand of math number sense through hands on learning. In reading, I concentrate on developing each of the five areas of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension). As an elementary teacher and tutor, my goal is to share my love of learning with students. My passion for teaching thrives in one on one settings. My goal as a tutor is to find out what drives students and what gets them excited so that I can incorporate that into their learning. In addition to interest driven learning, I include fun, engaging, and hands on activities in every tutoring session. I know when students are having fun, learning comes more naturally.
To monitor student's progress I focus on a few targeted learning goals. I track student's success through simple assessments and graph their learning over time. For example, I developed a plan for one student to increase his accuracy and completion of morning work. He started with only 30% accuracy and completion rate on his morning work (his morning working covered key reading and math skills). Over 3 months and several interventions the student was able to complete his morning work with 78% accuracy. Seeing student's growth and success is my favorite part of tutoring. I find it very rewarding to create lessons/interventions that are designed for student's specific needs for maximized learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have my elementary teacher certification through Michigan Department of Education. Also, this is my second year as a teacher in grades 1 and 2. I have experience individually assessing students and data tracking.
I have two years experience teaching reading to 1st and 2nd graders as a classroom teachers. I teach out of Reading Street that targets specific phonic skills every week. Before becoming a classroom teacher, I also taught a reading intervention group to low level 2nd graders that used strictly phonics skills to elevate reading level for one semester. In college I took a teaching reading class that covered vowel sounds, vowel digraphs and vowel blends.
