I have been a teacher for 20 years. I got my teaching certification in general science from University of Michigan because I couldn't decide which I liked better: Life Science or Physical Science. Teaching the physical properties of the four spheres of our Earth, lured me into a Geophysical Science Masters program at Mississippi State. I am passionate about science! Everyday in the classroom, I work to create an environment for students that brings science alive and meaningful. My students make models of intangible concepts and manipulate them to see how they work. We participate in actual field studies at a local county park, and explore current events with field trips. When I make the language student friendly, and modify techniques to individual learning style, students are able to take ownership of their learning. My classroom is one with an easy rapport between my students and I, because I strive to make learning comfortable, yet challenging for them.
Sometimes, despite all the modifications, group work and remediation I make in the classroom, some kids still struggle with certain parts of a lesson. Many times students come in to see me before or after school for tutoring. Together we figure out what part of the lesson they are struggling with. All kids can learn. Sometimes kids get all tangled up in the details and they feel like they will "never get it." Patiently, I show students how to sort the information out, and organize it so that it makes sense. We practice fitting all the pieces together so that the student can succeed with their goal!!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
