California State University, Northridge (Humanities,Cum Laude)
My life-long passion is the English language, in spoken and written form. I graduated with a BA in Humanities, Cum Laude, with an emphasis in Literature. I have written and published poetry, travel and entertainment reviews, and also have been an expert monthly columnist on a major business website.
My goal is to help my students learn to use the tremendous power, beauty and lyricism of the English language to communicate more effectively and to enrich their educational, professional and personal lives. At the same time, my hope is that I might instill in my students a passion or love of their own for language and its proper usage.
I also am a lifetime student of the Bible, and enjoy helping others learn its history, appreciate its structure, interpret its contents and understand its messages. Also, and in that connection, I am also well-grounded in Classical (ancient Greek to Roman) languages, art forms, literature and culture.
After an initial needs assessment, I keep my lessons simple and straightforward, with a clear learning objective for each—challenging students, but not overwhelming them. I generally assign homework after each lesson, but I am aware that modern life is busy and do not overload students. When there are five or more lessons involved, I provide regular progress updates for my students and give a summary report to each student at the conclusion of each set of lessons.
My tutoring fees are $50/hour online and $80/hour in-person, discounted $5 each for five or more lessons, and with special pricing for 1 to 3 lesson packages targeting a specific objective. I am generally available weekdays, and one to three evenings per week, depending upon my students and schedule. Cancellation requests must be received 4 hours in advance of any scheduled tutoring session.
Whatever your English, Bible or Classics needs, I am here to help you. Please contact me at your convenience to discuss your learning challenges and a plan to reach your goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a student of the Bible since childhood. After high school, I originally attended a pre-ministerial college and studied the Bible, World History, German (Reformation) and Latin and Greek (ecclesiastical) languages before completing my degree in Humanities cum Laude at CSUN. I taught Sunday school classes when I was younger and Bible classes for adults as an adult teacher. I have also been very active and involved in the church, holding various positions and attending countless topical, historical and book-by-book Bible studies.
I am a student of World History, Ancient Mythology, Classical History, Classical Art and Architecture, Classical Literature (which I read to this day) and Latin and Greek languages. In addition to Western Literature, I also had a Classics emphasis in my Humanities Major (BA, cum Laude) from CSUN and was a few units short of a Minor in Classics and not far from a Major in Classics (when I chose to graduate and get married).
