About Laurie

Some people think that the ability to write well is a gift. That's not true. It's a skill that anyone can learn. As the great American writer Richard Bach once said, "A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit."

I have more than twenty years of professional experience as a writer. I've worked as a journalist, a marketing copywriter, and a freelance copyeditor. Two years ago, I returned to the classroom myself to earn a Masters in Fine Arts in Writing. I spent a great deal of time reading and writing about all genres of literature, learning methodologies for writing and revision, and providing feedback that is constructive but emotionally supportive.

I will meet you where you're at. Maybe you need to brush up your English skills before taking a college entrance exam. If so, we'll review some of the trickier grammar rules, discuss common errors in text, and reading strategies. Maybe you're stuck on a research paper for school or an admissions essay for college. I'll discuss different ways to generate ideas. I'll teach you how to craft a powerful thesis statement and organize your evidence. Maybe you've been told your writing isn't strong enough. I'll identify areas for improvement and give you tips for working on them. It's important to remember than writing is a recursive process.

One of the things that makes me unique is that I'm a lifelong learner. Chances are, I'm going to get excited about whatever you're working on. With my help, you'll become a better and more confident writer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have prepared lessons covering common errors in English usage and mechanics tested by the ACT. During these lessons, I review tricky grammar rules for commas, subject-verb agreement, apostrophe usage, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and more. Then I give students the chance to practice those rules with me. I will walk students through a sample ACT English test and point out ways to answer questions efficiently and choose the best answer among multiple correct options. For students who intend to take the optional writing test, I break down the elements of a successful ACT essay and show students how to use their time wisely to plan a complete and convincing reply to the writing prompt.

ACT Reading

Strong reading comprehension is important to doing well on the ACT. I teach skills for active reading so that students can grasp an author's main ideas and key vocabulary as well as evaluate the author's audience, purpose, and tone. I'll show students how to mark up a reading passage to find answers quickly. Then I have students practice drawing inferences about reading passages and making connections between those passages and other materials they've read.

English

I have a Master of Fine Arts in Writing, which gives me a deep understanding of grammar as well as all styles of writing from expository to persuasive and narrative. In addition, I teach students various strategies for reading comprehension.

Grammar

Most writers make the same mistakes over and over. Some common pitfalls are the use of passive instead of active voice, misuse of commas, and sentence fragments. At the outset, I will help you identify areas for improvement so the tutoring sessions that follow will make the most of your time.

Literature

My graduate coursework focused on literature for children and young adults. As such, I'm very knowledgeable about fiction, non-fiction, and poetry for young readers. I can coach students in reading with a critical eye to identify an author's main ideas, theme, and literary style. My undergraduate coursework included important works from the British and American canon as well as books by authors from historically oppressed populations.

Proofreading

As a copywriter and editor, I was responsible for proofreading materials written by me or others prior to publication. It's especially hard to proof a piece of writing that you've revised again and again. One strategy I like to use is to proofread backwards; that is, start with the last sentence. I can show you how to review your writing for common errors that your computer checker will miss.

Reading

The best way to becoming a stronger reader is to read often. As a first step, I'll help your student find interesting reading material at the right level. Then I'll teach your student how to use visual clues to "size up" the text before we dig in. I'll show your student how to use context clues and root words to define difficult vocabulary. I'll use guided questions and mapping strategies to help your student comprehend the text and connect it to the knowledge he or she already has. With older students, I'll spend some time giving them the terminology of literary analysis so they can talk about how the writer has gone about his craft. Together, we'll demystify the reading process!

SAT Reading

I will review the kinds of reading passages that your student can expect to see on the redesigned SAT. Moreover, I will teach your student steps for reading those passages critically and efficiently so they can grasp the main idea, understand unfamiliar vocabulary in context, and follow the author's argument. Because infographics are included on the SAT, we will practice interpreting charts and data, too.

Writing

I have helped students through all phases of the writing process, from coming up with ideas to polishing their prose. In particular, I have helped students to craft their college entrance essays. Unlike test scores, letters of recommendations or grades, the entrance essay is one aspect of the application package over which the student has complete control. If well written, the essay can go a long way toward showing a college why the student makes a great fit for that institution. The Common Application essays give students the opportunity to paint a picture of themselves through a specific lens: their background, an accomplishment, a challenge or an event. Individual colleges may ask for additional essays or short responses to other questions. The prompts for the Common App essays are available on the Internet. As a result, students can think about which prompt to tackle before they meet with me. To brainstorm possible responses, some students like to write freely in a journal. Others prefer to make lists. If a student completes this prewriting activity before he or she meets with me, I can use the first tutoring session to settle on the strongest idea, develop a solid thesis, and choose an organizational structure for the essay. The student can then write a first draft of the essay at home. At our next session, we’ll review the draft together. Depending on the shape of the draft, we might need to meet to review a second draft. I’ll always review the final draft to provide a fresh set of eyes for typographical errors.
