I have been tutoring since I was 15 years old because I am bilingual in French and English. I have been teaching French and Spanish at University since 1964 when I was a teaching assistant at Stanford University. I taught as a University Fellow at Princeton University in 1970.

I have also taught French and Spanish at Rider College, New Jersey, Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and Rochester College in Rochester, Michigan, where I am an adjunct in Spanish. I also teach at Rochester Community Schools (Adult Ed.). I have also taught children for the Rochester School System. I have French classes in my home, and I also have classes and tutoring sessions at other peoples' homes.

One of the things I have enjoyed the most have been my lessons through Skype because I have been able to teach people all over the world: Reading, England, Lausanne, Switzerland, Roumania, Singapore, Argentina, etc. Some of this work was done through Language Trainers.

My students usually do stay with me a long time because I make the lessons fun, and they learn at their own pace. Each person has a different way of learning, and I try to cater to that. For my Spanish students this year, we had a wonderful video I used for comprehension, and I was delighted to see that my students were able to understand nearly everything they heard by the end of the second semester. We also did Nulu articles, which were fun, and some Spanish stories from Youtube, which one of my students could imitate perfectly. We read some children's books too.

I specialize in young adults and adults. I do not tutor children younger than age 11 because that requires special training and I am trained to work with young adults.

In my French classes, there are Youtube videos, TF1.fr., the French television station on the internet, and some wonderful kids' books to read.

Since I have three masters and a Ph.D. in French and Spanish, since I am a writer of historical fiction, and since I have written many books and articles in English, I guess my grammar in all three languages - is good. Ironically, I do know much more about French and Spanish grammar than English. Since grammar is emphasized in foreign language study, I had to learn these grammars cold when I began teaching. That said, I prefer to emphasize learning phrases that the student can use in everyday speech and upon which he can build by substituting vocabulary words, because it is difficult to carry on a conversation when one is always trying to reason out the correct grammatical construction.

I was the Editor-in-Chief of Solaris Press, where I edited the essays and books of the top professors in French and English. I have published 14 books of my own (three scholarly works, seven children's books, and four novels), two scholarly studies, an edition of an Old French Text, and two scholarly collections of essays.

Kind teacher, great conversationalist

Leigh tailors each lesson to my needs exactly. She is a wonderful instructor and is delightful to learn from each week.

Tutor responded:

Thank you Cady! I l love doing lessons with you. Nobody else can speak well enough to have a real conversations with me! Sags are good at languages!

Good teacher

We always talk what we experience in our life. When I don’t understand what she said, she always make sure whether I understand or not. It is good for me. Because people studying 2nd language tend to understand what they heard. But thanks to her kindness, I don’t have to tend to understand what she said. I can always tell her what I don’t know when I cannot understand what she said during our conversation.

Takuto, 25 lessons with Leigh
Tutor responded:

Dear Takuto, I have so enjoyed knowing you, and I am really glad you got a chance to see some of this country despite Coronavirus. I hope you will start those businesses we talked about, get very rich, have beautiful children, and come back to visit us again some day with your family! Leigh

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Leigh is a superb English teacher and I am so glad I found her, sensitive to the my girl's needs. She encourages and inspires her and I am privileged to have such a great English teacher to teach my girl. Highly Recommended!

Naomi, 35 lessons with Leigh
Tutor responded:

Naomi, I love teaching Emily. She is very bright and very conscientious. She is also very sweet and cooperative.

A great and knowledgeable teacher

Ms Leigh is a very patient and knowledgeable French teacher. She has helped our son in improving and in gaining confidence with his French class in high school which he has struggled a lot. Our son has enjoyed and learned so much more from Ms Leigh compared to his actual French class and is learning how to cope up with his struggles in his French class. A great teacher.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Leigh teaches my 2 middle schoolers French and is very patient and sweet with them. She assigns them regular homework so they practice during the week. I recommend Leigh.

Highly Recommend Leigh!

I have been taking classes weekly with Leigh to learn French as it has been one of my personal goals--she has exceeded all expectations, has been patient, kind, and makes learning really fun. She teaches above and beyond the textbook with fun facts while you learn, has been really beneficial with learning how to properly speak the language and gives great feedback as to what to practice on each week. I have been very happy with my results and will continue to learn from her each week! She not only has been a wonderful teacher but also has been a great source of knowledge as students such as myself dive into a new language, new culture, and everything that pairs with learning. I highly recommend Leigh for all levels of French, especially for those who are looking for help in general with speaking and learning a new language or tutoring for a class.

Great Teacher!

Leigh is very patient and helpful. Our first lesson was beginner friendly which made me extremely comfortable due to my current level of French. I’m looking forward to more lessons.
