About Alexis

Welcome, potential students! I am a graduate of Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education majoring in Elementary Mathematics. I am currently an interventionist at two elementary schools. I work with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students for math. For two years I taught as a teaching assistant in a middle school Montessori classroom. The classroom consisted of 7th and 8th grade students. I had experience teaching all subjects, including pre-algebra and algebra. I also tutored 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math for two years through the school. In addition, I taught summer school, which is solely mathematics and language arts, for 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th grades.

I have high levels of experience working with elementary mathematics, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. I work with students on all of these subjects, usually as part of their ongoing classroom curriculum. My goal as a tutor is to fill in any gaps that may exist and then take my students a step further so they are ready and prepared. I love to use the internet as a resource, especially the website Khan Academy. I truly love mathematics and want kids of all ages to love it, as well. As a tutor, I draw on my teaching experiences to be enthusiastic, flexible, and patient.

Because of where I work and my schedule, I tutor in the evenings and on the weekends.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Alexis listens and helps.

Alexis took the time to listen to the student needs. She was patient with my daughter and explained the information in a very basic and simplistic way. She showed her how to use a formula to answer many problems in geometry. My daughter wondered why her teacher never explained it this way because it made so much sense to her. Alexis is kind and has great energy. My daughter is an introvert and she
