Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to teach K-5. I have mostly been working with lower elementary students (K, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd grade). I was placed in a kindergarten class during my student teaching. At that time, I wasn't sure if I wanted to work with students that young. Within just two weeks however, I was pretty sure that lower elementary was where I should be. I started working with a student who was struggling with reading and writing, he was only able to count to 3. After working with him one on one he started to show major progress. I enjoy finding new and exciting ways for children to learn.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have had experience teaching phonics during student teaching. Phonics is the relationship between letters and the sounds they make. It’s all about associating the letter to the sound. There are 44 sounds in the English language. When teaching these sounds we have to start at the very beginning so that children develop the proper reading skills. For example, they need to learn the sounds of the 18 Consonants and 5 short-vowel sounds and 6 long-vowel sounds. Once the children have mastered these sounds they can move on to Digraphs, r-Controlled Vowels, and Diphthongs. Phonics has a specific order when followed becomes a great teaching technique. First letters and sounds are taught. Then letters are combined to make words and words are used to make sentences. I customize my lessons to fit the needs of the child.
