About Jessica

I believe in working collaboratively with students to determine how they best learn. Most students learn through a multisensory experience and that is what I try to provide. This may mean that, in one session, we are dancing, drawing, writing and singing. I am an advocate for developmentally appropriate practices and for building and maintaining family and community relationships. I encourage individuality in children. I treat each child with respect and help them to build a positive self-image. In addition, I believe in community activism; I volunteer for Headstart Family Engagement events, through Jeter’s Leaders and am a Girls on the Run Coach.

In the 5 years that I have worked in Early Childhood and Behavior Management, I have been fortunate to have access to excellent professional development that includes PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support), CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), Handwriting Without Tears and Family Engagement. In addition, I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Communications from Western Michigan University. I have extensive knowledge of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) training in the psychological, behavioral, social and emotional needs of children and understand what is needed to help children fulfill their physical, mental, educational and social needs. I utilize ABA principles that can be implemented to either increase or decrease a desired behavior as well as improving socially significant behaviors. Socially significant behaviors include communication, social skills, academics, reading and adaptive living skills such as gross and fine motor skills, toileting, dressing, eating, personal self-care, domestic skills, and work skills.

I have experience with most of the math curriculum used in Kalamazoo County including: Go Math, Pearson Math and Scott Foresman Math. I utilize a number of math aids to enhance the lesson including visual aids, songs, drawings, videos and several interactive websites.

There are five literacy areas I will assist your student with: reading aloud, guided reading, shared reading, independent reading and word study; additionally, we will work on comprehension and retention skills. I will assist your student with understanding the writing process; to demonstrate how to coordinate their writing process from conception to the completion of a text. Components of the writing process include planning; drafting; sharing; revising; editing; evaluating; and, for some writing pieces, publishing.

I will work with your student to enable them to understand, participate in, and make informed decisions about their world as well as helping to explain relationships with other people, to institutions, to the environment, with knowledge and understanding of the past. I will do my best to provide your student with skills for productive problem solving and decision making as well as for assessing issues and making thoughtful value judgments. Above all, I will demonstrate how to integrate these skills and understandings into a framework for responsible citizen participation locally, nationally, and globally.

St. Jerome proclaimed, “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. 'Til your good is better and your better is best." I truly believe that every student can improve and be the best version of themselves.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have received professional development training in Handwriting Without Tears. I have most of the curriculum and workbooks for preschool through third grade as well as the supplemental tools.
