About Louise

I'm originally from the Chicago area; I've lived in Michigan since 1994. I have roughly 25+ years teaching in a face to face elementary classroom and am currently certified in the State of Michigan.

I received a master's degree in educational technology in 1998 allowing me to teach middle and secondary school technology. I was employed in the Catholic School System as technology coordinator as well as geometry instructor for students taking advanced mathematics in elementary school.

In addition, I’ve taken part in the training of medical staff at our local hospital in the use of their newly adopted electronic medical record, known as an EMR.

From 2002 through the end of the 2015 school year, I was contracted to teach online for Michigan Virtual School, providing instruction in math recovery and digital imaging and communication (basically photo editing and composition).

Being a very visual person, experiencing art, technology and math allows me to fully explain the relationship between these subject areas. Ironically, math was my least favorite subject as a high school student, but my experience at University of Illinois while taking math courses for elementary teachers opened my eyes to the various aspects of math as it's used in everyday situations.

While teaching geometry, infused with technology, I have been able to help students relate how we use geometry everyday without even realizing it! Conversely, students in my technology classes learned some basic and not so basic math skills without even knowing it!
Creating and writing computer curriculum and providing training for students, faculty and staff have given me insight to the different viewpoints of how to use computers in our everyday life.

I believe that students learn the best when content makes sense and is relevant. It is not enough to know how to do something...without understanding why!

I am married and the mother of two sons, grandmother of one and have two rescued, retired, racing greyhounds.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Geometry

Teaching directly from the high school text, in order for my 8th graders to receive credit for this course, I infused technology as well as real life examples into class. It was most important to me that students understood that more than memorizing formulas (although there is some memorization), that this was a problem solving class. The student should be able to look at a problem and draw on the skills they've learned to logically offer a solution. It is important to realize that there is more than one way to reach a solution.

Graphic Design

As an online instructor for Michigan Virtual University, I had to create lessons for a photo editing class that employed design elements. Examples in composition elements would include the rule of thirds, element placement for publications, color balance, hue and saturation. The use of software (GIMP) that employed layers for placement and orientation was used and is similar to other graphic programs such as the Adobe suite of software that contains Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Flash. I often had to correlate the similarities between software programs and cite examples of how the different tools have been used. We also covered design elements such as composition and presentation in the various graphic formats available, particularly in programs like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Included are the tools for altering text elements such as formats, kerning, size and appropriate placement.

Macintosh

I have been using a Macintosh computer for about 20 years in both a face to face classroom and online. At times, I've had to teach both platforms in the same school.

Photography

For approximately 12 years, I have provided online instructions using GIMP, an open source photo editing program functioning in the same way as Photoshop, to students enrolled in Michigan Virtual High School classes. We explored many editing techniques, including but not limited to, enhancing photos and compositional techniques.
