About Edie

I am a certified teacher with a Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education from Saginaw Valley State University (2013). I have cross-categorical special education training (all disability categories)from Grand Canyon University. I specialize in tutoring homebound students with rare disabilities or unique needs and homeschool students. I have Michigan teacher endorsements in Cognitive and Emotional Impairments. I am also certified in Music Education and Psychology (2001). These endorsements allow me to teach students with disabilities in all subject areas at the Elementary to Middle School Level.

I am highly qualified to teach K-12 Music Education and Psychology (7-12). My primary instrument is Flute, but am trained in all instruments, music history, music theory, and composition. I also have experience in teaching children ages birth-8 in Even Start.

Prior to obtaining my degrees, I worked as an English tutor and Braille translator at St. Clair County Community College and Saginaw Valley State University. I also have extensive history working in the medical field. I am skilled with rare disabilities, Severe Multiple Disabilities, Cognitive Impairments, Emotional Impairments, Autism/Asperger's, Orthopedic Impairments (e.g.: CP, EDS, POTS), Other Health Impairments (e.g.: ADD/ADHD, dyslexia/word blindness), and more. I have been teaching professionally in public schools for 14 years and as a volunteer teacher assistant for a decade while attending college.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education. I have 7 years experience teaching students with ADD/ADHD in my resource room and in the inclusive setting. Many specific focus strategies help students with ADD/ADHD to have success in the general education curriculum.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from Saginaw Valley State University. I enjoy working with students on the Autism spectrum in my resource room and in the inclusive setting. I use research-based instructional and behavioral strategies from MDE START Project to help students have success. I incorporate social skills instruction to improve the quality of functional life for students with ASD.

Bible Studies

I have been an active Bible student for the past 25 years and taught Bible studies to many individuals in private lessons. I also give Bible talks at our local congregation.

Composition (Music)

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (2001) and have been writing music compositions and teaching music composition to students ever since earning my degree.

Dyslexia

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from SVSU. I have 7 years of experience teaching all areas of special education. I use direct instruction to teach strategies that promote success in reading and reading comprehension. I utilize specific accommodations for students to have success while they are learning reading strategies.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from SVSU. Part of this training is 76 hours of coursework Elementary Education. I have worked as a substitute teacher in Elementary classrooms for 3 years prior to becoming a special education teacher. I also have experience in co-teaching Elementary subjects and grades during my employment as a special education inclusion teacher.

Elementary Math

I have been working for an online school for the past two years and have recently been doing co-teaching and teaching math at this level on a daily basis. I also have a Master's Degree in Special Education, so I specialize in remediating lagging skills that prevent success in grade level math.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (2001) with flute being my primary instrument. I taught general music and band in public schools for 7 years and earned Division I ratings at district and state festivals. I also was the director for stage musicals in public schools.

Music History

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (2001) and Music History is a key component in the music education program. I have taught Music History in public schools for 7 years as a part of General Music and Band programs.

Phonics

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from SVSU. Teaching Phonics (phonemic awareness) is a key component of Special Education services and vital to students learning how to decode words in order to read fluently. I have been teaching Phonics as a part of my public school resource room and inclusion programs for the past 7 years. I also assist homeschool parents in teaching phonics to their young children.

Public Speaking

Public speaking was part of my university training and is a daily part of my job as a certified teacher. I have participated in public speaking events at professional development seminars, webinars, music performances, and when giving public Bible talks. I have been recommended to travel nationwide to give professional development presentations, but declined the offer when travel conditions deteriorated.

Religion

I have great sensitivity to all cultures and religions. I have taken high school and college courses in world religions. I teach Bible lessons and touch on world religions as part of the training to help others understand world religions.

Sight Singing

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education (2001) and sight singing is a key component in the music education program. College of Music students are required to learn pitches and develop sight singing skills in order to obtain a degree in music education. I have taught sight singing in public schools for 7 years as a part of General Music and Choir programs. I teach sight singing to interested ones in our congregation who have great voices, but don't know how to read the music.

I had a wide variety of students with special needs in my resource room and in the inclusive setting; many had significant needs for Autism, Cognitive Impairments, Severe Multiple Impairments, and rare disabilities. I have always been able to discover a way for the student to learn and develop functional skills because I have a firm belief that every child can learn.

Many of my students have made progress from below-average performance to getting on the honor roll after learning appropriate study and time management skills.
