In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked as a substitute teacher teaching K-6 grade students. I feel my experience in various subjects at this academic level has prepared me with the skills to tutor students in K-6.
I have earned a Master Degree in Counseling from Oakland University, Michigan which include graduate level courses in psychology and I have taught Introduction to Psychology at the junior college level. I have worked as a Substitute teacher in grades K-6, teaching various subjects which require Reading at some level. Reading is vital to every student's success in school. As a substitute teacher, I always provided students with basic skills to improve their reading. I believe students must learn to read with a purpose with specific questions in mind. For example, "What am I suppose to learn from this book? What is the writer of this book trying to teach me? To become a good reader, students must learn to relate what they are reading to life experiences.
