I am a certified public school teacher in the state of Michigan. I recently retired from my district, Farmington Public Schools, where I taught grades 3-6. My last five years in Farmington, I taught the Common Core curriculum to fifth and sixth grade students. I also taught accelerated sixth grade math to fifth grade accelerated students.
My passions are for teaching reading and writing to both struggling and advanced students. I also enjoy teaching Michigan history and fifth and sixth grade math. I look forward to working with students outside the classroom on a individual level. My experience with tutoring was in college, where i tutored math students in remedial college math courses.
My love for writing grew as a result of participating in the Oakland Schools Writing Project during one summer program. This is part of the National Writing Project. It is where I also learned to hone my own writing talents. I am currently writing a television pilot about teaching and working on a couple of different plays to keep my own writing fresh.
Farmington Public Schools adopted the Common Core curriculum well before the state of Michigan did, so I have had many years of learning about and using the core to teach my classroom students. I am very familiar with the Common Core for fifth and sixth grade.
At my school I often taught accelerated math to fifth grade students. I was able to challenge them and teach them logic puzzles to expand on their thinking. I enjoy helping students learn to show their thinking in math, and being able to explain and construct their responses, not just give quick answers. I also enjoy helping students catch up to grade level math peers. Having taught grades three through six, I am able to see the foundational skills necessary for success at each level.
I love history, and I have taught both Michigan and U.S. history for the last 16 years! Although there is no common core content for this subject, I enjoy helping students master the content and understand our past and how it continues to apply to today. This is often many students least favorite subject, so I enjoy the challenge. Sixth grade common core is all about a global perspective, a great respite from learning just history.
Please contact me so that we can look at what your current challenges are together.
I would like to see how, together, we can amplify your progress. We might even be able to learn material that your classmates haven't even started on yet. Preteaching is quite powerful. If you are excited to move forward and challenge yourself, give me a try! I look forward to working with you! I can meet you at your public library. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Farmington Public Schools committed to learning and applying the Common Core standards well before the state of Michigan adopted them. As teachers, we used the Common Core to implement our content material in math, reading and writing, as well as in speaking and listening skills. Our professional learning teams and our staff development were often focused on the Common Core. My classroom lessons were based on the Core, with daily learning targets aligned to it.
