In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken 2 years of organic chemistry courses: an AP course in high school and upper level college course during the pursuit of my undergrad. I took the national collegiate organic chemistry exam and placed in the the top 5%. Organic chemistry was my favorite class. I also took and excelled in a 400 level biochemistry course which is strongly tied to organic chemistry.
I have volunteered at various middle schools during student teaching helping struggling students learn to identify important information when taking notes and how to create an organized outline. We made flash cards together and quizzed each other studying for assessments. As a teacher, the first portion of the year is dedicated to note taking and study skills along with content. Students learn to identify important content and vocabulary using cues like bold face letters and summarization. Study skills are learned through games and group work.
