In addition to being bilingual--fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish, I have worked in cross-cultural situations for many years. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Belize, I was assigned exclusively to the 4-H Youth program which specifically targeted rural young people of disadvantaged situations of Creole, Garifuna and Mayan descent, who were then brought to the National 4-H Centre for further training in agricultural and living skills. As a volunteer with Youth With a Mission (an international and interdenominational mission organization), I traveled with a team that sought to serve the needs of people in refugee villages and impoverished city barrios through food and clothing distribution, teaching English, and medical outreach. I have also taught Spanish at the college level for more than 12 years, a task that often involves listening to and advising young people on their career choices or on their personal problems, and I worked with a foreign student exchange program here in Michigan, hosting, chauffeuring, teaching English as a Second Language, and overseeing 13-18 year olds from Spain, Mexico, Germany, China, Norway and Indonesia.

I can provide basic Spanish lessons starting from the alphabet, etc., or tailor conversational phrases to fit your needs, such as medical terminology for healthcare providers or command Spanish for the criminal justice system. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
