I am a former certified teacher who loves to work one-on-one with my students by tutoring. I was certified in Elementary Education, k-5th grade and 6th-8th grade self-contained. In addition, I held a endorsement in learning disabilities. I have experience teaching in both the general and special education areas. I have worked with all age groups, teaching elementary, middle school, and high school students as well as adults.
I find that being a tutor is an exceedingly rewarding career. While working with a student on an one-to-one basis, I can gain a better understanding of an individual's strengths and weaknesses. Thus, during a lesson, I can have a student use one's strengths to improve the goal area of weakness. This can provide a student who is struggling in a subject area and who is very discouraged with it, some success mixed with encouragement while moving toward the learning goal. I feel that it is very important for a student to believe in oneself and feel able in order to learn. I have had a lot of wonderful success with my former students! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was formerly certified in Michigan to teach elementary school, k-5th grade and 6th-8th grade self-contained. This includes all basic elementary subjects such as math, reading, writing, social studies, English, and science at a kindergarten through 8th grade level. In addition, I held a Learning Disabilities Endorsement which allowed me to teach K-6th special needs students who are categorized as Learning Disabled, including ADD, ADHD, POHI, etc. I have experience teaching all grade level students in elementary, middle school, high school and adult high school as a public school teacher, substitute teacher and as a tutor since my graduation from the University of Michigan in 1989. I have taught all subjects in elementary k-6th grade.
I was formerly a teacher in a resource room. I have worked with numerous students with a variety of disabilities. Although I am no longer a certified teacher because I am semi-retired, I had a learning disabilities endorsement on my prior certification.
