About Sheryl

I am a former certified teacher who is retired from teaching in the public school system. I was certified in Elementary Education, k-5th grade and 6th-8th grade self-contained. In addition, I held a endorsement in teaching children with learning disabilities.

I have experience teaching in both the general and special education areas. I have taught special needs students with LD, ADD, ADHD, and Autism. Also, I have worked with adult students who were pursuing their high school diploma by teaching classes in Adult Education Programs. Since 2002, I have been providing tutoring to students in kindergarten through college.

I find that being a teacher is an exceedingly rewarding career. I especially love working one-to-one with students, as I can gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, then turn those weaknesses into strengths. Thus, I can make a huge impact on a student's academic future. In addition to providing the teaching, I work on giving students the encouragement they need in order to believe in themselves, which is necessary in order to learn. I have had a lot of wonderful success with my former students!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was formerly certified in Michigan to teach elementary school, k-5th grade and 6th-8th grade self-contained. This includes all basic elementary subjects such as math, reading, writing, social studies, English, and science at a kindergarten through 8th grade level. In addition, I held a Learning Disabilities Endorsement which allowed me to teach K-6th special needs students who are categorized as Learning Disabled, including ADD, ADHD, POHI, etc. I have experience teaching all grade level students in elementary, middle school, high school and adult high school as a public school teacher, substitute teacher and as a tutor since my graduation from the University of Michigan in 1989. I have taught all subjects in elementary k-6th grade.

Special Needs

I was formerly a teacher in a resource room. I have worked with numerous students with a variety of disabilities. Although I am no longer a certified teacher because I am semi-retired, I had a learning disabilities endorsement on my prior certification.
