Michigan State University (English)
I have been providing tutoring services to children (aged 6+) and adults for over twenty years. Students have been in a public school setting, after school enrichment and within the legal system. I thoroughly enjoy reading and writing (and studies of English Language) and problem solving with students to optimize their experience and spark a love of learning.
In addition to a BA in English, I minored in American History studies; graduating from MSU (Go Green!). I have practical life experience including: Proofreader/copy editor for a local newspaper, independent Tutor for MSU students and grad students, contract Tutor for a Clinton County school system (including a maximum security facility and county jail), and substitute teacher in Ingham, Clinton, Eaton county with special interest in Special Education.
I have experience in developing strategies and good practices for studying, test taking and successful writing. SAT, ACT, grad school applications and writing sample submissions.
There is no better satisfaction than seeing the confidence grow in a child who feared raising their hand to ask a question or in providing an answer when called on by their teacher. Another GED earned/issued, a college packet completed, or international students communicating successfully in the community, are examples of why I thoroughly enjoy being a tutor. We all learn in different ways, at different speeds. I learn the specific needs of each of my students and provide them with the tools they need to achieve their goals and to love learning!
I have worked with children with speech delays, impediments, and learning disabilities. Non professional speech therapy and medical background has afforded me the ability to work with a student to follow their medical team treatment and build the academic experience into the existing care plan.
Years of experience is what I bring to my students. I was employed by Gannett, Inc. as advertising/editorial Proofreader, and tutored MSU and LCC students. Following, I tutored adjudicated teens in academic studies and prepared incarcerated populations to successfully earn their GED. My corporate work experience was dedicated to ensuring error free and grammatically correct content of all internal and external communications. Recently, I completed copy writing and copy editing a children's book and a biblical reference guide.
While my college major and focus was predominantly in English, I minored in American History. I have a good general background in the subject and access and knowledge of resources to assist a student through their adventures in History!
Extensive daily work with learning and physically disabled individuals as well as adolescents in maximum security programs, and incarcerated adults has given me adequate skills, training and confidence to serve students in these categories with their path to success in learning.
I'd love to hear from you to learn what your needs are and to develop a plan that sets you up for SUCCESS!!! Education is the key to YOUR future!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience serving non-native English speaking students and graduate students at Michigan State University and Lansing Community College.
