My name is Nathan W. I am currently a 4th grade teacher with Birmingham Public Schools. Before coming to BPS, I was the 7th and 8th grade math teacher at Taylor Exemplar Academy in Taylor, MI. I also teach a college class at Oakland Community College entitled College Success Skills. I earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 2009 in Elementary Education, majoring in English, and minoring in math (I am certified through 8th grade in math). I also earned a Master's degree from Capella University in 2013 in Reading & Literacy.
My experience as an elementary and middle school math teacher gives me the background knowledge of how certain concepts serve as building blocks to other concepts that will come down the pipeline. I also understand that students learning in a variety of ways, and that teachers and tutors have to differentiate their instruction, as well as approach. I look forward to continuing to share all that I know in support of students of math.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
