About Ken

I recently retired as President and CEO of a small consulting firm specializing in mathematical modeling for the pharmaceutical industry. My academic training is in mathematics (BS) and statistics (MS). I have formal teaching experience through a graduate teaching assistantship and at the junior college level. Moreover, throughout my consulting career I have had numerous opportunities and experiences to provide training in mathematical modeling and statistics to pharmaceutical industry scientists. I have a passion for the application of mathematics and statistics in industry and for teaching others.

I have experience tutoring my own children through high school (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, honors pre-calculus, AP calculus) and college (calculus I - III). Often I would show them different approaches to obtain the mathematical solution to help them understand the material. I love experiencing what I call the "light bulb moment" when the student truly understands the material and has new found confidence in tackling other problems similar in nature.

My career has focused on the development of mathematical models based on scientific principles in the field of pharmacology. These models are derived from systems of differential equations. I take great pride in my ability to communicate very complex mathematical and statistical concepts to industry scientists and senior management in a way that inspires confidence to use the results and predictions of my models in drug (pharmaceutical) development decision-making.

As a recent retiree, I'm looking for opportunities to give back to my community, inspiring young people to develop an appreciation for the mathematical and statistical sciences and its application in industry. I hope that my passion instills in my students a desire to learn and to succeed in achieving their goals. My rate is very reasonable and I promise to be very flexible with my time. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a BS in mathematics and a MS in statistics. I have a considerable amount of experience using algebra in my consulting career in industry as algebra is a basic building block for all other mathematical subjects. I also have experience teaching and tutoring students in algebra. I encourage my students to be very explicit in writing each step of an algebraic derivation to arrive at an algebraic solution. This helps them to better understand algebra and the thought processes needed to derive the solution.

Algebra 2

I have a BS in mathematics and a MS in statistics. I have a considerable amount of experience using algebra in my consulting career in industry as algebra is a basic building block for all other mathematical subjects. Calculus

I have a BS in mathematics and a MS in statistics. I have a considerable amount of experience using calculus in my consulting career as a mathematical modeler in the pharmaceutical industry. The mathematical models I employ are derived using calculus. I have also taught and tutored students in calculus.

Precalculus

I have a BS in mathematics and a MS in statistics. I have experience teaching and tutoring students in pre-calculus which often involves a combination of algebra, analytical geometry and trigonometry. There are numerous laws and equations in analytical geometry and trigonometry that the successful student must learn and apply to fully understand pre-calculus concepts. I work closely with the student to make sure he/she understands conceptually which laws and equations are most appropriate to tackle specific problems in pre-calculus.

Statistics

I have a BS in mathematics and a MS in statistics. I have over 35 years of industry experience as an applied statistician. I have experience teaching elementary statistics classes as well as providing statistical training to pharmaceutical industry scientists. With my vast industry experience I hope to inspire my students to see the importance of statistical concepts in supporting the scientific method (drawing sound statistical conclusions from empirical data).

Very effective and worthwhile

My daughter went from a failing grade to getting a B on her final exam in her AP Statistics class after spending a few tutoring sessions with Ken. She was ecstatic and it gave her a much needed boost in confidence.
