I have thirty years of teaching experience under my belt and have taught at many universities, colleges, and high schools. I have a PhD in Pure Mathematics as well as a masters and bachelor degree in the subject. I have passed a recent background check as well. My teaching experience has allowed me to develop a full range of teaching pedagogy and this enables me to teach every student with every learning style. It is critical to understand math because it teaches youth and adults how to learn to make connections and develop solutions, it exercises the mind.
Math is all around us and as a tutor I hope to shed this understanding upon my students. I am a dedicated educator. I value education and I believe in every students capability. I believe that mathematics has a unique nature that differentiates it from other subjects. Math is different then any other subject because missing basic aspects and little holes in elementary mathematics can cause problems and impend a students ability to understand higher math processes and functions. Math is a hierarchy, one needs to have a strong foundation to move on to the next higher level. I believe that I can cure the difficulties students face with math. Students sometimes have the notion that math is "scary", this happens because they don't understand. I will change this perception and math will become a subject that they will love and even consider a game, this will happen when I fill in the gaps that they may have.
I have daughter who attended the University of Michigan Ann Arbor as an undergrad and majored in biology. She is now working on her masters there and, she always tells me how useful the math tricks I taught as a child helped her in college for almost every course.
Math just needs that, "click". Once a students understands math, the possibilities are endless. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
