I began taking advanced-level math courses in middle school. My father became my math tutor. I remember crying during our "sessions" because his teaching "style" was not the least bit student-friendly!! That experience, together with actually having some caring and excellent high school teachers, led to my choice of math education as a career.
I majored in math education and minored in English education. I began tutoring while in college, and I haven't stopped teaching since! I tutored public, private and home-schooled students for 18 years in Arizona. Prior to that, I taught high school math in Texas.
I specialize in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Algebra II Honors, Geometry, Geometry Honors, Trig/PreCalc., College Algebra, ACT, SAT and GRE Prep. My one-on-one instruction identifies your problem areas and helps you understand how to correct your techniques, always with the goal of making you confident in your abilities and less anxious about your future math requirements.
My tutoring sessions involve assessing the areas of deficiency that a student is facing in his current math assignments. We concentrate on all areas that are currently preventing success in the classroom, including both new topics and those that have not been mastered in past math courses or chapters. I am constantly being told by my students that I explain things in a way that makes sense to them even when their teacher can't.
My ACT, GRE, and other admission test preparation sessions involve practice, practice and more practice. My students practice actual test questions in my presence so that we can determine which topics need to be emphasized during our time together. One of my goals is to decrease the "fear factor" many students experience just walking into a test facility. My past students have gained confidence and have been admitted to private prep schools and public and private universities all over the United States.
Some examples of successes with past students:
One Michigan student has been accepted into the Air Force Academy--make that TWO as of 8/15!! Another received a full scholarship to the University of Alabama. Others have accepted sports scholarships (soccer and hockey) to the UofM and Ohio State. A junior raised his ACT English score by 4 points after meeting for 4 hours, concentrating on commonly-asked English topics! Today, (7/9/15), I received a text from the father of a student I tutored for the June ACT. We spent 7 hours together, hoping to bring up her composite score of 18. Her dad said..."she got a 24 on her ACT. Thank you for the support!"
I tutored a club soccer player who had a scholarship offer to a private California university but had not scored high enough on the SAT to receive it. After taking the Princeton Review and taking the test two times without succeeding, he began practicing for the test with me and made the score he needed to receive a full-ride to a very expensive school!
I worked with a college graduate in MI who had been offered a lucrative fellowship for her Masters program at a noted university in MI. She came to me with a lot of fear about the math portion of the GRE. We worked together on all her areas of weakness with only a month to prepare, and she gained the skills and confidence to take the test and make the necessary score on her first try! Recent ACT students achieved the following: Air Force Academy appointment, full scholarship to University of Alabama, hockey scholarship to Ohio State, increase of reading score from 24 to 29 after meeting 3 times. An 8th-grader qualified for Algebra 2 honors for his freshman year at a Jesuit high school.
I am proud of former students who have gone to Ivy League colleges for both under-grad and graduate programs. I also have taught several students who are currently in medical school or have already become physicians.
My students make me proud, and I love what I do--helping a student in the early or later years of math requirements! I began taking advanced-level math courses in middle school. My father became my math tutor. I remember crying during our "sessions" because his teaching "style" was not the least bit student-friendly!! That experience, together with actually having some caring and excellent high school teachers,
Cynthia worked hard to get my son in during a busy week leading up to some major project due dates. She is helping him stay organized with his priorities and we have seen test improvement already.
Cynthia was great with Lexi. She is super patient and made explaining something she thought was difficult very easy to understand!
She taught me different ways of learning my material so I could find a way that fit me perfectly. I like how I always practice problems with her and how she will help me with them. She has helped me become more confident in math and helped me get the grade I wanted!
Cynthia has worked with my daughter for two ACT tests. My daughter feels she has been an excellent tutor, crafting each lesson to my daughter's strengths and weaknesses. Cynthia is always positive and encouraging. My daughter found the tips and advice she gave for each section to be very helpful. Overall, a very good experience. We highly recommend Cynthia.
Cynthia tutored my niece in her first college semester Intermediate College Algebra class for about six weeks. My niece was very pleased with Cynthia. The proof is in her final grade which exceeded our expectations.
John, it was my pleasure to work with her. She was a perfect student because she went to her class, paid attention and took good notes, and came to me ready to complete her assignments! I am so glad that she did so well on her final and received a good grade in her class!!!
Cynthia is so patient and kind. My daughter didn't want a tutor, she was afraid they would act like she was dumb. Cynthia has been so great with her. She is really coming along in math.
How kind of you to post a comment! Working on ACT math with your daughter has been a pleasure! She has shown me her logical methods for eliminating wrong answers and narrowing down the choices (which is a highly-recommended strategy for test-taking). That isn't something that is easy to teach! She just DOES it! It is a joy to watch!
UPDATE on 1/6: Congratulations to your daughter on raising her composite score by 3 points after working so hard during our sessions on reviewing/improving her math skills. That's an amazing improvement!!!!!
Cynthia is nothing short of amazing. We have had three tutors and Cynthia is by far the best one we have ever had. She is not only patient and kind but very well versed in Algebra. In addition, Cynthia really knows how to teach the subject. She takes an active role with our daughter which allows our daughter to really comprehend and retain the material. I cannot recommend Cynthia highly enough. Hire her! You will not be sorry, in fact you will be very blessed.
Tom, thanks for sharing your daughter with me! She has a great attitude and really is focused on doing everything with excellence. She has learned how to apply rules of algebra to each problem until the correct answer is found. I especially like it when I ask her to "be the instructor" and teach me how to do a problem! She does a great job of breaking down the process and explaining it verbally as well as in writing. I can understand why her grades were so high! She worked hard and totally deserved them!
Cynthia is providing my daughter with the instruction she needs to succeed on the math/science portion of the ACT test. She has the expertise required to address any of her weaknesses in these areas. I am also impressed by Cynthia's thorough feedback of her progress after every lesson!
Thanks, Marcella for your kind words. Your daughter is so motivated and conscientious. I love spending Wednesday afternoon with her, and I will miss her after the ACT!
My daughter has learned so much from Cynthia. She really enjoys working with her and feels a special bond with her. I would highly recommend her if you are in need of ACT preparation!!!
Thanks so much for your kind words! I enjoy every session with your sweet daughter. I will miss her after next week!
Cynthia is very friendly, knowledgeable and always well prepared for the lesson. My daughter enjoys her teaching style. We are glad that we found Cynthia and looking forward to continuing lessons with her.
I enjoy your sweet daughter so much. She is such a great math student, and she works so hard on her Algebra II material! She is a quick learner!
Cynthia was very knowledgeable and patient while explaining the ins and outs of algebra. I felt very comfortable with her and she explained concepts in a way that helped understand.
I called Cynthia for help with GRE prep. She was accommodating and friendly. After our session, I felt much more confident in my math abilities, and my practice scores are already improving. Cynthia teaches with enthusiasm, and takes the time to make sure you understand; she genuinely wants you to succeed. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a math tutor! It was an excellent experience!
Moriah, I am thrilled that you scored so well on the GRE and have been admitted into grad school to follow your passion! You were an excellent student, and I loved working with you on the GRE math problems. Congratulations!!!!!
Cynthia worked with my daughter for both ACT preparation and Algebra II. She was a huge help for both areas. My daughter really enjoyed working with her each week and felt confident after each session. I appreciated the fact that Cynthia was flexible, on-time and reliable. I would highly recommend Cynthia as a math tutor.
Peggy, thanks for the kind words. Your daughter was a pleasure to work with. She was sometimes frustrated about how fast her teacher whisked through the material, but her attitude was always willing and positive. She generally knew more than she thought she had absorbed. She just needed extra practice!! Hope the summer is a welcome break for both of you!
Cynthia was very patient and was concerned with my son really understanding Algebra 1. She was easy to talk to and knew the subject well. I recommend her to anyone who really needs a good tutor, she also fit us in to her schedule with short notice.
My son has had two lessons so far. He is a ninth grader taking honors geometry who has just hit a difficult part in the curriculum. He liked the venue for tutoring - a coffee shop, and he immediately took to Cynthia. She put him at ease and it was all very comfortable, with no awkward moments. Just what you need from a tutor. In the two sessions, she gave him confidence but more than that, he has been motivated to take his books out and work independently to prepare for a test.
I am so happy that we met Cynthia. We will be meeting with her again come test time. Thanks Cynthia!
Our daughter loved her 1st session with Cynthia. We came from a more structured environment at a learning center and things just weren't clicking over there. Having a professional mentor like Cynthia is not only having a tutor but an adult role model for our teen aged daughter.
Our daughter has improved over 1 letter grade last card marking and is putting much more effort into her studying and lessons. She loves Cynthia and greatly appreciates her conscientious nature. She wishes she would have started with her at the beginning of the school year.
Cynthia is a very good tutor. The first time I met with her she found a unique way to teach me so I can understand.
Cynthia has really helped my high school junior with his math. He enjoys the sessions with her and his grades are improving. She has been great!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored several students for the ISEE, leading to their acceptances into the Catholic school of their choice. The ISEE tests topics which the student has already covered in middle school as well as topics which will soon be covered in high school. In many ways, it is similar to the SAT. It evaluates the applicant's mastery in both math and verbal.
I have also tutored students in the placement test for math in parochial schools. My student (who had already been accepted to his school of choice due to his scores on the ISEE) placed out of Algebra 1 and into advanced Algebra 2.
I've tutored several Plymouth/Canton students in Alg 2/Trig. Sometimes it's for a lengthy time period. Sometimes, it's to get through a rough spot.
