About Shannon

My name is Shannon. I am a teacher and have been for 15 years. My general education classrooms have consisted of first and second graders. Through my undergrad I spent time substitute teaching K-12. I really loved all grades. They each have their own special qualities. Currently, I am a second grade teacher and an Instructional Lead Teacher for K-6 teachers in my school district. I help research and provide case studies of reading and writing to Oakland County and Michigan. In 2010, I was honored with my district's elementary teacher of the year award and a nominee to Oakland County. I am warm and knowledgeable about how young children learn, and I understand their special needs. I foster enjoyment and love of learning in each child through developmentally appropriate materials, and a stimulating, positive teachings. I can help your child develop their unique potential as they grow physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Lastly, summer slide is real. I encourage you to provide your child with summer reading, writing, and math activities. Today's new standards are filled with rigor. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am highly qualified to teach elementary education. I obtain highly qualified each year with my district's teacher evaluation tool. This school year 90% of my second graders (55 students) are leaving at or above second grade non-fiction reading level. Three of my students are qualified for special education services and have made improvements.

Handwriting

As an early elementary teacher I have taught handwriting in many diverse ways. As a mother of a child with a physical disability, I have come up with a variety of ways to practice handwriting. My technique is always kind and gentle.

Phonics

Throughout many professional development series, I have practiced with children a wide array of hands-on activities to teach phonics. Phonics curriculum is a large part of first and second grade. As previously stated, children learn through hand-on experiences when learning phonics skills.

Study Skills

In high school I maintained a high grade point average. At Oakland University, I graduated with honors. While completing my master's degree at Margrove, I also finished with honors. I am highly qualified to teach elementary education. I obtain highly qualified each year with my district's teacher evaluation tool.
