About Sarah

With over 12 years of experience as a classroom teacher and school counselor, I feel confident in my ability to help others achieve their educational goals. I am very patient and have a way to help any student overcome and find success in his or her academics. My teaching experience includes working with all grades from 6-12 teaching English, writing, reading, study skills, and Government. I also have experience volunteering with elementary students. During my years in the public school setting I have worked on many district level committee's helping administration implement "best practices" for teachers and how to reach students of all levels. In 2006 I was selected as Outstanding Teacher of the Year for my district.

Currently, I work as an Academic Advisor with high school students who take dual enrollment courses at the community college level. In this arena I work with a large caseload of students helping them find success in both high school and college academics, as well as provide individual consultation as they prepare to select a college major and post dual enrollment university.

Aside from my experience, it is my passion and drive to see individual students succeed that keeps me going. I enjoy watching individuals overcome any type of obstacle to be the best they can. As a tutor I work to identify an individual's strengths and areas needed for growth through interaction and attention to detail. When I tutor an individual student, I tap into my past experience, but also pay attention to the needs of the individual I am working with as I believe in education "one size does NOT fit all".

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a significant amount of experience both as a teacher and a guidance counselor working with students diagnosed as ADD/ADHD. More importantly, I am a parent of a 7 year old boy that has ADHD. I am very confident in my personality and delivery of material to help these students stay engaged, active, in the learning process.

Government & Politics

After serving as a Congressional Intern in Washington D.C. I recognized my passion for teacher US Government and Civics. For many years I taught Government at the high school level and provided countless hours of tutoring. I hold a valid Michigan Professional Teaching Certificate with English, Political Science, and Guidance/Counseling endorsements. Currently I work as an advisor and seminar teacher for dual enrollment high school students attending community college as well as traditional high school.

Study Skills

I currently teach a study skills course for high school students taking community college level courses. Things covered include time management, organization, note taking, how to write effective essays etc. I also help students tailor their study skills style to what suits them, not just what works for me!

Writing

For over 12 years I have taught English for a Macomb County school district. During this time my classes were embedded with essay writing, including persuasive, expository, research, and argumentative styles. I also taught a semester long course called "Research Paper" in which I taught students how to write an argumentative based research paper using MLA or APA style. I have an excellent knack for helping to ease the anxiety scholarly writing can bring students. I hold a valid Michigan Professional Teaching Certificate with English, Political Science, and Guidance/Counseling endorsements.
