Education - I grew up and attended university in Germany, graduating in Physics with the equivalent of a Master's degree. (I have been living in Macomb County for well over a decade now.) The path through the broad and fascinating subjects of physics (mechanics, electromagnetism, particle physics, optics, theoretical quantum dynamics, etc.) also provided me with a very strong background in math, including algebra, calculus, differential equations, analysis and vector analysis.
Experience - Although my experience as a tutor is still somewhat limited, I believe that my passion for / knowledge in math and science can help students overcome their obstacles. My daily work in my current career as a software developer has helped me to become very good at "troubleshooting" and identifying the root cause of a problem.
Approach - Every student has his/her own story, his/her own strengths and weaknesses. I will patiently work with the students to identify with which specific steps/concepts they are struggling. In that context, it is important for the student to understand that "It's OK to be wrong" during the tutoring sessions. Getting to the root of the problem(s) will only work if the student is not afraid to open up.
I would be happy to arrange a first get-to-know meeting - free of charge. Education - I grew up and attended university in Germany, graduating in Physics with the equivalent of a Master's degree. I'm very glad I found Thomas for my college physics class. He was very helpful and patient with me especially since I seemed to be worse at math than physics. With the help of Thomas tutoring me I ended up getting a 3.7 in my physics class. I'm completely ecstatic!
Thomas is helping my daughter with German, and on occasion, algebra. He is knowledgeable and explains things so my daughter understands. I would highly recommend him.
Thomas really helped me out understand derivatives! Very patient with the problems and questions and broke the questions down clearly to understand and remember easily!
Not only did Thomas have an impressive knowledge of algebra, he was flexible and really cared about teaching the subject. I was very happy.
My son said he feels so much better after sitting down with Thomas. He said he was very patient and very knowledgeable and now he has friends that would like to see him also.
Our experience with Thomas was a little non-traditional. My daughter had a 13 page physics lab re-write to work on and she was stuck. Her original paper had been graded a "D" and had been marked with a lot of teacher comments. She was baffled with the comments and I didn't know how to help her. This paper was worth a large percentage of her grade. Honestly, we were desperate. Somehow we lucked upon Thomas.
He agreed to review the paper and provided insight, clarity and direction. As I mentioned, not "tutoring" in terms of solving a physics problem but an amazing resource. He guided my daughter in areas concerning data analysis and statistics and explanation of the physics. Oh, and this was over the Christmas Holiday and Thomas was on vacation! He responded very quickly and clearly put a great deal of thought and effort into understanding the teacher's comments to provide direction for my daughter. He helped her look at the paper with fresh eyes and fix the issues that she struggled with. Her final grade was a high A !
Thomas is obviously very intelligent, thoughtful and responsive. It was also very clear to me that he truly wants to help the student.
I feel very fortunate to have found him. Also, what a bargain!
My daughter hasn't used him yet for actual tutoring but I know when we do it will be valuable.
Thanks so much, Thomas !
Thomas is excellent! I highly recommend him. He did an amazing job and got my son from a D to an A in no time. Our son's confidence levels improve each and every time he met with Thomas. On top of that he was very easy to communicate with and he made the process simple. I could not have asked for a better experience. We are absolutely ecstatic with him and the WyzAnt process! If you need a Mathematics tutor look no further!
Thomas was always on time and very patient with my daughter. Also, he was very knowledgeable in statistics. I would recommend him!
I learned more in 2 hours with Thomas than I have in my class for over a month. He explains things so you can understand right away. He's a very intelligent man. I see a long term relationship with him to fill in some of the gaps not only in math but in many other subjects as well. So any student having trouble with the math program at Oakland or any other class, call him - you will not be disappointed.
Thomas is very patient and very quick to set up meeting times through texts. I took a basic physics course at Macomb Community (MCC), and he was very helpful. I was obtaining low scores on my first two exams, and once I started meeting up with Thomas, my next test was an 80%. He knows physics with very little review. If it wasn't for him, I would be retaking this course. Thank you again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was born in Germany and lived there for the first 31 years of my life. I started learning English in 5th grade. I have lived in the U.S. for well over a decade now and I still speak German with my family in Germany as well as with some of my German co-workers here in the U.S.
I am bi-lingual and I can effortlessly switch back and forth between both languages.
