I had to learn English in a hurry when I started Kindergarten, so I know firsthand the panic that can set in when a person doesn't understand! That experience gives me an edge and a lot of patience in helping a student learn another language.
I received my Ph.B. from Wayne State University majoring in Spanish, Natural Science, Social Sciences, and Humanities. I have a Permanent Secondary Certificate from the State of Michigan, and I continued in a Master's program in Foreign Language Education at Wayne State University. I have taught Spanish (beginner to advanced levels) in public and private schools from 6th to 12th grades. At one point I designed and taught an eighth-grade Spanish class in our school district when a government grant became available. At our middle school level I also designed and taught exploratory classes in Spanish, French and German. It was especially gratifying to have had the high school German enrollment increase to double the previous figure. At the middle school I have also taught science, math, social studies and study skills. To me, study skills are the key to success in learning, whatever the subject matter.
After my retirement from full-time teaching, I have worked with adults wanting to improve their English-speaking skills through PALs International, and I have been acting as a free-lance interpreter (for Spanish and Polish) in courts, at medical appointments, and the like. I am comfortable working with children or adults and my schedule is flexible.
Hopefully this information will boost your confidence in trusting me to help you in your goal of improving your language skills! My daughter has been struggling with grammar for her Honors Spanish II class. Christine cleared things up in one lesson. Great teacher!
A great language tutor! Christine has an excellent approach. I wanted to rush things by getting straight into Polish grammar, but she brought me instead to the necessary basics that will really lock in pronunciation and flow of the language. Bardzo dobrze! (Well done!)
Christine initially evaluated my knowledge in Spanish, which seemed none existent. Following evaluation, she began to walk me through some relatively basic concepts from her textbook. Throughout the tutoring session, Christine was very patient, thorough and attentive. She made sure all my questions were answered and that I had full understanding of the concepts before moving on. I enjoyed the variety of methods she used to assist me in learning the language, and kept the session very engaging.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am bilingual and bicultural in Polish and English. Polish was my first language; I spoke it exclusively until I started kindergarten. In my home, my parents insisted on their children speaking only Polish and that we take Polish lessons. Most of my extended family have come over from Poland (even recently); over the years various of these family members lived in our home for months at a time, giving me ample opportunities to hear and speak Polish with them. All my parents' friends and their children spoke Polish at our frequent social gatherings. I have traveled twice to Poland on extended visits giving me further opportunities to maintain fluency and broaden my cultural knowledge. I read and write Polish, and I have maintained this language to the point that I have been accepted and employed on numerous occasions over the last 8 years as an interpreter for courts, medical appointments and the like. This is work that I still do. My early experience with my first two languages led to my studies of first Latin and then Spanish at the college level. I became a language teacher, a fulfilling profession from which I have recently retired.
I have enjoyed a career as a middle- and high-school Spanish teacher. Since my retirement I have served as a professional interpreter for Spanish and Polish (my first language), and I have tutored both adults and young people in English, Spanish and Polish. I am familiar with the curriculum materials used by schools both in the standard programs as well as the International Baccalaureate program. As I myself had to learn English in a hurry when I started school, I have an extra insight into what goes into picking up another language. My experience also includes teaching Study Skills
