When most students think about being tutored, they consider themselves to be somehow "Less Than" what they should be. Nothing could be further from the truth! All of us have areas of life where we shine and areas where we need a helping hand. My name is Linda, and I would be thrilled to walk alongside you as you discover all that you are capable of. You probably know many things you can teach me as well!
I have taught school for the last 32 years. My five children have all grown up, so
I have time some extra time to spend tutoring. I have loved teaching in the lower elementary grades as well and middle school and high school. I enjoy so many things, it is hard to know where to start! In the lower elementary grades, I loved reading with my students. I am convinced that if reading is not your favorite, we just haven't found the right books yet! Did you know there are books about anything you like? Chances are we will find some that are right up your alley!
In middle school, I spent years teaching science, math, and English. Science experiments are the best! We worked on science fair experiments and even had a simple rocket club after school! In math, we used many math manipulative to learn things that way. Did you know, I have a set of Hand-On-Algebra games that work for students from 3-8th grades! I love to play while we learn; it makes it so much more fun! In English, we read from many genres. I have to admit, I am a bit partial to historical fiction and science fiction. As far as my personal interests, I love Star Wars, Harry Potter, trying new recipes, cross-stitch and spending time with my children and my two daschunds, Gracie & Liam. One thing you should know about me that you may not appreciate, is that I am a Chicago Cubs, Bulls, & Bears. At least you have been warned! :-) I look forward to working with you and helping you shine!
I have taught math in elementary and middle school for 30+ years. I have tutored my students one-on-one after school during those years. I was a founder and tutor of Western Michigan Christian's School Math Club. It consisted of a group of middle school students who met several times a week, during the summer, for a time of fellowship, instruction, math games, and real-world math challenges.
I have taught reading and English skills in grades K-8 for 28+ years. In the lower elementary grades, we read books, and then used these reading skills in science activities or other areas of interest the individual students had. In middle school, my focus was on building reading skills through a variety of genres, teaching grammar through writing and sentence diagraming. Students have so many thought to express! We also discovered that song lyrics were poems in disguise. Who knew?
When my own children were young, I taught them many things at home to enhance their learning. My oldest was reading fluently at three years and was reading at a fifth grade level by kindergarten. Because I loved teaching myself, and had the opportunity to send my children to the school where I taught, I did opt not to homeschool. I did give it tremendous consideration before my son started school. I have come from a family of many homeschoolers. I respect their decision as the best one for their child. In my experience these dedicated parents are committed to excellence in every aspect of their child's education. I would consider it an honor to come alongside a family as a tutor.
So, now it is time to start our learning adventure together! I can't wait to hear from you and get to know you even more! Contact me with any questions you may have, and when your parents are ready, we can set up our first lesson together! I can't wait! :-) When most students think about being tutored, they consider themselves to be somehow "Less Than" what they should be. Nothing could be further from the truth! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach home school for two basic reasons. First, I am a certified veteran teacher who has 32 years teaching K-9 students in all subjects. Second, I come from a family of homeschoolers, so I am familiar with the unique needs and desires for making their student's education the best it can possibility. I view homeschooling as an excellent choice for educating children and will respect each particular family's values as I present lessons.
