About Rachel

I have taught high school math and ESL for 6 years and have over 10 years of tutoring experience. I love working with students, especially in the tutoring setting. I love being able to give one-on-one attention and working to really figure out where a student struggles and how to best meet their needs. I am certified to teach math, Spanish, and English as a Second Language in the state of Michigan. I have extensive knowledge of the common core math standards and the skills needed to move from one level of math to the next. I also have a masters degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages. I have a minor in Spanish and am able to comfortably converse, read, and write. Most of the teaching experience has been with high school students, but I am also enjoy working with elementary and middle school students.

I am comfortable having students at my home for tutoring, or I am willing to meet in at a library or coffee shop. During each tutoring session, I will answer questions, explain new concepts, and give guided and independent practice to make sure the student has a firm understanding of the concept. I will provide homework after each tutoring session so that students can practice and progress in between our meetings.

I have 6 years of teaching experience and find unique ways of explaining topics to students. I have worked with all types of students - those who love math, those who hate math, ones who speak English and ones who don't. I will always make sure you understand the concepts and are comfortable with the information. I have taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. I understand the concepts that students struggle with the most on the ACT, and I am certified to teach and have tutored calculus.

Please email me today so we can begin working together to meet (and exceed) your educational goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored for the ACT, and while my specialty is math, I am comfortable with all the subject areas on the test.

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra 1 for 5 years in the classroom setting. I have worked with students from various background, abilities, and languages. I use manipulatives frequently to help with understanding and explain concepts in simple ways. I highly value a student's understanding of a concept and expect them to be able to explain their thinking behind the process they use.

Algebra 2

I taught Algebra 2 for 3 years in the classroom setting. I have worked with students from various background, abilities, and languages. I use manipulatives frequently to help with understanding and explain concepts in simple ways. I highly value a student's understanding of a concept and expect them to be able to explain their thinking behind the process they use.

Geometry

I taught Geometry for 3 years in the classroom setting. I have worked with students from various background, abilities, and languages. I use manipulatives frequently to help with understanding and explain concepts in simple ways. I highly value a student's understanding of a concept and expect them to be able to explain their thinking behind the process they use.

Prealgebra

I taught Pre-algebra for 1 year in the classroom setting, but because I have taught the classes following Pre-algebra, I know which concepts are most important to master before moving on from Pre-algebra. I have worked with students from various background, abilities, and languages. I use manipulatives frequently to help with understanding and explain concepts in simple ways. I highly value a student's understanding of a concept and expect them to be able to explain their thinking behind the process they use.

Precalculus

I am a certified math teacher for grades 6-12. I taught high school math for 6 years covering pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry. I also have experience tutoring in pre-calculus and calculus. I now stay home with my three kids and enjoy tutoring part-time.
