I can help! I have taught English composition and various related courses for more than 40 years, from middle school to college as well as for professional development/employee groups. I currently teach world mythology, journalism, and reading comprehension/vocabulary/study skills part-time at an area university. My bachelor's degree is in English with a writing emphasis, and I hold secondary certification in English and social studies. My master's degree is in English and journalism, and I was a news reporter and editor for five years.

Since I am semi-retired, I am available to travel up to 40 miles each way. My home base is the Lakeshore area (Muskegon/Grand Haven) at various times of the day and evening, including weekends. I can work one-on-one, with a small group (discount for more than one student), or an employment group. I am professional, outgoing, and personable.

For much of my teaching career, I have taught the skills being tested in the Analytical Writing section: organizing a written response to a reading, supporting it with sound reasoning and examples. The verbal section focuses on grammar and usage, as well as higher-thought processes such as analogies, antonyms, and reading comprehension. I currently teach reading comprehension and vocabulary to college freshmen. The math section includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis; I am approved by Wyzant as a tutor in algebra and geometry.

I am a retired middle school and high school teacher, certified to teach all subjects in grades 7-8. I currently am a substitute teacher in K-12. While most writing these days is done using computers, the art of cursive handwriting is fast becoming a lost art. I am experienced in course development and implementation and work best one-on-with students to focus on what they want/need to learn. Specifically relating to cursive handwriting, the best way to improve one's handwriting is to practice, especially using whole-arm motion for circles and lines. Working with a tutor can help guide the student in not only seeing the correct format, but in implementing it.

I currently teach a developmental reading course at the college level. Since phonics involves sounding out words using prefixes, root words, and suffixes, teaching reading is often best accomplished by focusing on learning the basics of phonics and then putting together the sounds to make words. Students progress to sounding out longer and more difficult words.

Another area of focus is on figuring out word meanings in context, as one of the best teaching methods is using words in context. Finally, I encourage all of my students to read, read, read! That's one of the absolute best ways to expand one's vocabulary.

Much of understanding American history revolves around putting events into perspective by reading and viewing them using various media -- print, sound and visual (videos), and oral (talking with people who were there). Then the next logical step becomes relating history to our country today and one's own world. Much of understanding history is based on reading comprehension and critical thinking, both of which I currently teach at the university level. My background in the topic includes a minor in social studies (U.S. history, political science, and sociology), and I taught 8th grade history during my student teaching. I enjoy reading about history and discussing it with others. On vacation I often visit historical places around the country and world to make it come alive.

I have been a high school and college instructor for many years, and I am experienced in course development that focuses on the individual student's learning wants/needs. I currently teach a developmental reading course at the college level. Since phonics involves sounding out words using prefixes, root words, and suffixes, teaching reading is often best accomplished by focusing on learning the basics of phonics and then putting together the sounds to make words. Students progress to sounding out longer and more difficult words.

For much of my teaching career, I have taught the skills being tested in the Analytical Writing section: organizing a written response to a reading, supporting it with sound reasoning and examples. The verbal section focuses on grammar and usage, as well as higher-thought processes such as analogies, antonyms, and reading comprehension. I currently teach reading comprehension and vocabulary to college freshmen. The math section includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis; I am approved by Wyzant as a tutor in algebra and geometry.

Preparing for the SAT writing test involves an understanding of how to structure a writing response. A lot of my teaching and personal writing have revolved around planning to write as much as the actual writing. In my teaching and tutoring, I focus on several different types of writing, including argumentative/persuasive (some say all writing is this type), informative, evaluative, and narrative. I have taught college composition for more than 30 years, and have been a professional journalist and free-lance writer. I also am author of a writing-based workbook and I have edited books for two other people.

Amazing!!

Sue is a wonderful tutor and an amazing teacher! She is currently helping our son, who is a junior, prepare for his upcoming ACT test. With her help he scored a 28 on his first practice test! Sue quickly understood his learning style and taught to that style. She is fun, energetic and definitely a blessing!
