Central Michigan University (Exercise Science)
My name is Austin, and I am currently seeking my Undergraduate Degree in Exercise Science at Central Michigan University. The hobby in which I am most involved with is bodybuilding. My ultimate goal after I graduate is to run an after school program for kids ages 5-17 interested in living a healthy lifestyle. I love working with youth, and if I can give them the tools to live healthier, happier lives as adults, then I will have done my job. But until then, just working with kids is a whole lot of fun for me! I have a lot of experience working with kids ages 5-12. In my hometown, I work for the local Parks & Recreation department, where I am a youth referee and coach. Before I worked for the department, I volunteered as a coach for several youth sports teams.
What makes me a great candidate to be a tutor is my understanding of differences in how people learn. I have the comprehension that students learn differently from one another, and the sooner I, as a tutor, can find that optimal method, the sooner the student becomes a successful learner. When subjects come easier to a student, it is with my experience that learning becomes more enjoyable. This is why I will not only teach my students the concepts they need to learn in class, but also, how they can tackle new concepts on their own down the road, which I feel is vastly more important than being able to regurgitate information onto a page.
English was always my strongest subject in school growing up. While I do not take classes that revolve around the English language today, I am still in practice of reading literature and writing papers. I love to read literature, but my strongest points revolve around grammar. My grandmother was an English teacher, so proper grammar has been a must since I was a younger child. I have a ton of experience proofreading papers. I have a great love for all things revolving around the English language, and I would enjoy sharing that with my students.
I know that learning can be difficult for students, because most teachers try to educate within a mold that doesn't fit every student. Tutors exist to personalize the learning experience for the individual. If you or your child hates school or is having a hard time learning, then give me a shot. I will do my absolute best to fulfill their needs as a developing student. Hello!

He really helped my son understand and move forward on a Geometry project he was working on. My son was very pleased!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with this age group as my job for the past three years. Before that, I was a volunteer coach for this age group for several sports seasons, dating back 8 years. This group needs a hands-on approach to learning, as this will allow them to learn while having fun. Patience, personal connection, and positive encouragement are what I practice with students, and I feel these are vital in my success as a tutor.
