Central Michigan University (PhD)
I am an adjunct professor of History at Mid Michigan Community College and Central Michigan University. I completed my PhD in medieval history at Central Michigan University. I received my Bachelor's degree in Physics and Astronomy from Northern Arizona University and have Master's degrees in History from CMU and the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. I have won various awards for papers I have written and continue to present my research at academic conferences.
I grew up in California (in the San Francisco Bay Area) and went to college in Flagstaff, Arizona. Since I graduated in 2004 I have lived in Colorado, Arizona, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan and Scotland. I have lived in Michigan for the last six years (except for a year in Scotland) while attending Central Michigan University. I got married in 2008 and have two sons, a toddler and an infant.
As a graduate student at CMU I have taught several history courses as a teaching assistant including: Western Civilization I, Medieval History, American History, and History of the Middle East. In the Spring of 2013 I taught my own class on Western Civilization. I have attended numerous teaching seminars through the CMU Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching where I learned a number of teaching techniques that I have applied to the classes I taught. I also worked at an elementary school summer program when I was an undergraduate and worked for a small business that taught technology related after-school programs for elementary and middle school children after I graduated from NAU. While at NAU I designed an educational outreach program as vice-president of the Society of Physics Students by which we would go to local schools and teach one-hour hands-on science lessons for kids. I love teaching and currently work as an adjunct professor.
I grew up playing sports and continue to play hockey and soccer. Some of my hobbies include reading, woodworking, making medieval armor, and camping / hiking. Jon was extremely helpful. Clarity and conciseness was improved in the paper I had written. I look forward to asking for his help in the future.
Jon is a really good teacher. He also knew his subject really well. He was very patient with my son. Very positive and encouraging attitude. My son really liked him. Thank you.
I'm really learned many things from Jon. He explained me any difficulties in books. Also, he has good experiences in many topics and I understand from him many things.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed a BS degree at Northern Arizona University in Physics and Astronomy. I have worked in professional observatories and I ran the campus observatory at NAU while president of the Northern Arizona Astronomy Association.
I have completed graduate level courses in Ancient history (Greece and Rome). I have studied Latin as a graduate student for 5 years. I have taught university classes on the History of Western Civilization which focused on the classical and medieval periods. These classes included leading discussions concerning the works of Homer, Plato, Aristotle and other classical authors. My current PhD dissertation in part looks at Roman and Medieval views on language and education. It also includes sections on classical philosophy and the history of science in the classical and medieval periods.
I have completed two Masters degrees in History, one at Central Michigan University, the other at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. I have worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and an Instructor at Central Michigan University teaching history classes on Western Civilization, Medieval History, History of the Middle East, and American History. I am currently finishing my PhD in History at CMU.
