University of Michigan Flint (Mathematics)
Hi, My name is Ryan and I was a high school math teacher between 2010 and 2013. I taught 2 years at International Academy of Flint and my third year at Willow Run High School in Ypsilanti Michigan. I understand the need and ability to teach to multiple learning styles, often times simultaneously. As a certified high school teacher, I recognize the need to engage students in order to create a complete understanding of the material. I have taught multiple ages and grade levels between 7th and 12th, with that being said I can easily take the skills learned in those grades and tutor to younger students.
On a personal note, I am a father of a young man and work with him often with math as well as in other subjects. This has created a profound level of patience with different subjects as well as figuring out his particular learning styles. I am not currently teaching and would love the opportunity to continue helping children and young adults master a subject that I still find extremely exciting.
I have had three years of teaching math to students between the 7th and 12th grade. I always prided myself on the ability to think on my feet in the classroom and deliver the same message several different ways, and to all the various learning styles.
Math levels that I have taught include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Algebra 3, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus. In Algebra 3 I taught basic statistics to the students. I have taught in the traditional classrooms as well as in Project and Problem based classrooms. As an educator I have a "teachers bag of tricks" that I have employed in order to enhance my lessons.
I promise that as a tutor I will be attentive to where you are struggling or need help. I will be prepared and ready to help you any way that I can in order to help you reach your learning goal.
I have heard so many students say "I just can't do math" or "I am not a math person," and I believe that to be a way of psyching themselves out because the subject at the time is tough. You can do math and you are a math person. You do it everyday when you walk into the store but just don't realize it. I would love to help you realize that the concepts you are working on is within your grasp and help you to understand it, and If I can do that then It will be a job well done.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
