About Annie

Bio

Hi there! My name is Annie. I'm a musician, educator, and lifelong learner from the Midwest. Most of my time is spend teaching online lessons, performing in local ensembles, and presenting masterclasses on natural horn. I love to learn new things, whether it's a recipe or an instrument. When I'm not teaching, I'm practicing horn, hiking with my husband, reading, or brewing a cup of Oolong tea.

I took 3.5 years learning French, and have used it when traveling to native speaking countries and cities, such as Montreal.

I hold a Master of Music degree in horn performance with a minor in early music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. My undergraduate degree is in Music Education from Central Michigan University. Along with 7 years of collegiate studies, I have a collective 8 years of teaching private music lessons, middle school and high school band, and elementary general music. Students of mine have studied french horn and brass instruments, along with beginning woodwinds, voice, and piano.

I love meeting new people, and working with students of all ages, levels, and aspirations. During lessons, I offer instructions and ideas that will not only help students become better artists, but well rounded people.

I use a Canon TS Rebel Camera, capturing the natural lighting of everything within the lens view. My pictures are enhanced through Lr (Lightroom), where I keep the natural lighting of each image. My hobby has grown since meeting people, traveling, and moving between states in the Midwest. As a creator in the fine arts, I understand the detail, and effort that goes into making a product.

I competed in FFA conduct of meetings for four years, and made it to the state level every year. As a performer and teacher, I understand what it takes to connect ideas with audience members. Stage presence and poise have always been something I am good at, and have recently presented concerts in front of hundreds of parents at an elementary school.

History

Music History

Music History

Each lesson taught focuses on the needs of students. For instance, I coach students auditioning for college music schools based on the tests needed to be admitted. I have 8+ years of training in music history ranging from Gregorian Chant all the way to today's (contemporary) music. From there, we learn and analyze not only the music, but the culture of the time. It is so important to understand the perspective of the artists during each era to fully understand the music's lineage. I also currently teach early music on natural horn to students at University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, as well as Iowa State University.

Music

Ear Training,

Ear Training

Throughout my career as a musician and educator, I have learned/taught moveable and moveable do techniques, and solfege. Plus, as a historical horn player, I rely on my skills as a musician to identify tonic as I transpose into multiple keys. My listening skills curriculum uses real songs, spanning from early baroque to yesterday's top hits, where students and I listen to map out the progression of the bass line. Singing, and then memorizing the sounds in the head are the best practices! I use Ottoman books for sight singing training, and then work on chord progression skeletons based on the set rules of music theory.
French Horn,

French Horn

I performed in brass quintets, woodwind quintets, orchestras (throughout Michigan, Iowa, Indiana), as well as 4 solo performances for degrees, masterclasses at IU and U of Iowa.
General Music,

General Music

At Regina Catholic Elementary School, my music classes were based on Dalcroze and Orff techniques. Students learned how to sing using solfege syllables. Many instruments were available for use including a variety of keyboards, djembes, ukuleles, recorders, and a large number of rhythm instruments. The elementary spring concert included Beatles tunes and hymns appropriate for each grade. In December, 450 students performed seasonal repertoire that I organized and taught them. Whether I’m teaching private lessons, or full classrooms, the curriculum is based on the needs of the individual. I make it a point to make music fun for all levels of learning!

Saxophone

I have received a year's worth of training in saxophone. I own beginning method books and resources, such as Rubank Methods and Essential Elements that assist with learning saxophone techniques.
Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

As a horn player, I've learned to develop my aural skills to accurately place notes in the context of the music. I'm trained in Fixed and Movable Do, and have taught solfege to ages 6-65. When assisting students in sight singing techniques, I give them ideas as to how this is applicable to their lives as musicians.

I hold a Master’s degree in Horn Performance, with an Early Music Minor, at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as well as a Bachelor of Music Education from Central Michigan University. I taught Elementary Music for 1.5 years, and Middle School/High School Bands for a couple years where I primarily worked with brass sections. I develop lesson curricula around the needs and goals of individual students. My studio, online and in person, is dedicated to creating a warm, nurturing learning environment. Tone (our voice as musicians) is first and foremost the focus of each student. From there I include ear training, sight reading, sight singing, improvisation, as well as collaborative experiences that will not only enhance musicianship, but confidence in each student.

Voice (Music)

I currently instruct about 5 students (ranging from ages 5-75+) where we learn and work on music of interest. Some of the music we have worked on includes classical rock (David Bowie, Yusuf Cat Stevens, Travelling Wilburys, Beatles, CSNY, Sting, Eva Cassidy, Peggy Lee and many others). Plus, we have worked on more recent songs from different musicals, as well as pop artists such as Ed Sheeran, and Caamp. Every session contains time for students to warm-up appropriate to their voice type, along with ample opportunities to perform and delve into the techniques and meaning behind each piece of music.

Cooking

Cooking

From the time I was a 4 year old, I learned how to bake yeast breads in an oven, and cook many kinds of meals over the stove. Some of my favorite dishes to share with people are international foods (such as tikka masala, various Indian curries like butter chicken, true ramen, etc), as well as American comfort foods (breads, challa, muffins, spaghetti,), eggs (boiled, fried, poached, scrambled) along with what to do with green salads (crunch, sweet, salty), and desserts (crepes, bundts, layered cakes, cookies, cobblers, etc). I love learning new recipes, so I am always willing to work with someone who has a new recipe to try.

Annie did a very good job. I was impressed.

We're working on the things I made clear that I want to know and she had good suggestions for how to accomplish these. I'm looking forward to our next lesson. She emailed me a couple of websites where I can find music to work on and showed thorough knowledge a variety of musical fine points, or these were probably basic points for accomplished musicians but just the kind of guidance I needed. She showed contagious enthusiasm for making good music.
