My experience teaching consists of 7 years and ongoing, teaching diverse students in all subject areas. In the last 4 years, I have tutored 4th-5th graders in Language Arts and Math at an after-school program at a charter school where I was a 5th/6th grade Math and Science Teacher. I am currently working at a public school teaching 6th grade Math and Science. Unfortunately, there is not an after-school tutoring program where I currently work.
What I love about tutoring is being able to give students a different approach to learning using creative and engaging experiences to help those students who struggle in a certain subject area. I strive to find that light bulb to go off and that “ah-ha” moment in students.
An outstanding math teacher is a teacher not only understands the content, but also teaches math in different ways. Students learn differently and at different rates, I try to integrate different learning styles during a tutoring session to better suit the student being tutored. While tutoring in math I like to use games, manipulatives, projects, hands-on, problem solving, technology, and assessments. Good tutors progress monitor students for checkpoints to show student progress.
Most schools have adopted the common core standards. The district where I work bases their teaching and assessments on common core. I feel that being a part of a district that uses those guidelines, I am confident to tutor to those standards.
My experiences being a teacher ranges from pre-school to 6th grade. The range of grade levels and experiences demonstrate my knowledge of content in those grades. I believe an outstanding Elementary tutor is a teacher who is passionate about educating the youth as well as dedicating their time to help struggling learners succeed. I demonstrate patience in assisting students to reach their achievements.
Being a tutor I possess a passion for helping students learn and have the knowledge and skills to help students find new ways to look at difficult skills and concepts. I have a positive attitude and know ways to motivate students when they become frustrated by material they do not understand.
I encourage you to contact me to schedule specific learning targets and lessons to provide you with strategies and help so so can succeed in school. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Professional Teaching Certificate in the State of Michigan and 4 years of tutoring for Reaching Higher After-School Program 4th - 5th Grade in Language Arts and Math.
