About Jennifer

My passion for the English language has led me to a life of teaching and learning. In my twelve years of teaching college-level writing and literature courses, my favorite part of the experience has been working with students one-on-one. During individual conferences and tutoring sessions, it has been my pleasure to witness students make tremendous progress in their writing and language skills. For this reason, I have chosen to pursue a career in tutoring.

My greatest strengths as a tutor are my flexibility and willingness to listen. Tutoring sessions are tailored to meet the needs of individual students. We will work at your pace to achieve your goals. Although I do have a twelve-hour cancellation policy, I offer make-up classes.

In addition to my years of experience teaching college English classes, I worked as a writing tutor for three years at the University of North Dakota Writing Center. This position gave me the opportunity to help writers at all levels to improve their skills in various genres and disciplines. Many of my repeat clients at the UND Writing Center were second-language learners who recommended my services to their friends. I also taught English as a Second Language for eight months through ELS Language Centers in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Please contact me to schedule your first lesson. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

More about my ESL experience: I taught English as a Second Language for almost a year at ELS Language Centers in Grand Forks, North Dakota. I also helped many second-language learners to improve their writing during my three years as a tutor at the University of North Dakota Writing Center. In addition, I volunteered as a conversation partner through the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council.

Grammar

My experiences teaching college writing courses at various levels and tutoring at the University of North Dakota Writing Center have allowed me to develop effective strategies for helping students and other writers to improve their grammar. In one of my pedagogy classes I researched methods of teaching grammar in the context of writing and produced a scholarly essay on this subject.

Literature

I earned my Ph.D. in English from the University of North Dakota in 2012. During my years as a Teaching Assistant and Adjunct Professor, I have taught literature courses such as Good Books, Mythology, Introduction to Literature, and Introduction to Creative Writing. My primary literary interests include fiction writing, realism, modernism, American literature, British literature, and Virginia Woolf.

Proofreading

In addition to my twelve years of experience teaching college-level writing courses, my background in writing and journalism has cultivated my attention to detail. Not only am I able to help writers adhere to the standards of English grammar and usage, I am also highly qualified to help them improve their stylistic choices.

Writing

I earned my Ph.D. in English with an emphasis in fiction writing from the University of North Dakota in 2012. I have twelve years of experience teaching college-level writing courses, including College Composition, Research Writing, Business Writing, and Developmental Writing. I also tutored at the UND Writing Center for three years.
