About Timothy

I am about three months into the third year of my M.D. program at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology, minor in Chemistry, EMT-Basic training, and study abroad experience in Ecuador. During the years in between undergrad and medical school, I worked for the UIUC Department of Chemistry as a teaching assistant, and held two positions in research labs, one in evolutionary biology, and one in plant genetics. I also worked for a year training to be the farm foreman at the UIUC Sustainable Student Farm.

I presently live in Marquette. From 2012-2013 I taught MCAT prep in all subjects for courses offered by Examkrackers, Inc. I was a teaching assistant for general chemistry at UIUC (CHEM 102 and CHEM 104), an organic chemistry and general chemistry instructor for The Princeton Review MCAT Prep class, a tutor for Urbana Adult Education (for GED classes), and have taught chemistry to children.

I always ask students to describe what type of approach to tutoring suits them the best. Typically, I aid in the review of course materials, lectures or exercises; however, I am open to creating and presenting original lectures. I work with all ages, have worked the most with University students, and have a series of prepared interactive "kitchen science" projects for children. Usually I meet with students at a public library or a cafe, and I am willing to meet elsewhere.

Availability depends on the week.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I am at the end of my 3rd year of medical school and have taught multiple courses in Biology.

Chemistry

I have been a teaching assistant at the University of Illinois for general chemistry first- and second-semester level.

Organic Chemistry

I completed two semesters of organic chemistry as well as a lab course with exceptional grades. I have taught an MCAT Prep Course for The Princeton Review solely devoted to organic chemistry and have tutored more than ten students of this subject.

Physics

I have developed lectures that I can offer students preparing for the MCAT in this subjects.

Trombone

I started learning trombone at age 10 and pursued this consistently until my sophomore year at University of Illinois. I gave trombone lessons while I was a senior in high school to a beginner in my hometown. I have performed in concert bands, playing first chair throughout my middle and high school years, and then 2nd chair in University concert bands, in jazz bands playing first chair during my junior high and high school years, as well as 3rd chair in a University jazz ensemble, and have 4 years of marching and pit orchestra experience. I qualified multiple years in high school to play in IMEA contest ensembles, in both concert and jazz band.

Extremely friendly and insightful — Tim does a great job of breaking down concepts, explaining them in ways that are easy to understand, and asking questions to help the student think critically. He also does a considerable deal of research and work outside of lessons to find resources to help the student understand material. ...
