About Brendan

I recently just graduated from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a concentration in English Language and Literature. I finished with 3.3 GPA (shouldn't have taken so many physics classes...). I specialize in grammar, writing instruction, and reading comprehension. I tutored many students at the University of Michigan's Sweetland Writing Center.

I am a published writer with experience in tutoring. I love to read and discuss books. I earned excellent test scores on SAT and ACT reading and writing sections. I am pursuing a teaching certificate for English.

I'm an easygoing guy with a flexible schedule. My temperament is pretty happy-go-lucky, so I'm not going to insult or harshly criticize anyone. I make an effort to make English fun! (Yawn...) Give me a call or shoot me an email if you think we would be a good match.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I personally scored a 33 on the ACT English portion of the test. I have a degree in English from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, finishing with a 3.3 (3.6 in English courses) GPA. I possess 2+ years of tutoring university students.

ACT Reading

I personally scored a 34 on the ACT Reading portion and a 780 in the SAT. My degree in English required a rigorous reading schedule, so that both my reading speed and comprehension have substantially improved. I'll outlined the tutoring sessions according to their frequency, length, and thoroughness, with a strong focus on a student's weakest areas. Finally, I possess more than two years of experience tutoring university students.

Bible Studies

During the course of university studies, I took a class called "The Bible as Literature". It was taught by the legendary professor Ralph Williams, and we had to read the entire Bible that semester. Additionally, I was familiarized with translation differences, as well as the importance of specific passages that supported Christian doctrines.

Reading

I've recently received my bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, finishing with a 3.3 (3.6 in English courses) GPA. Students visited me at the U of Michigan's Sweetland Writing Center for feedback and thoughtful suggestions. Incredibly wide-read, I will give the pupil the necessary tricks and tools to keenly understand any piece of literature.

Vocabulary

Besides winning a school spelling bee, my vocabulary is considerably expansive. I've full proof methods throughout the years of studying English to expand one's vocabulary with a series of drills and reading habits.

Writing

My work has been published by Vice co-founder Gavin McInnes as well as appearing in the Livonia Observer and Michigan Daily. Students visited me at the University of Michigan's Sweetland Writing center to receive feedback and help with revision. Besides providing excellent examples of writing, I'll illuminate the mechanisms and logical sequences to which all great writing adheres.
