About Karen

I have much experience helping children of all ages with their homework and projects as a nanny, babysitter, and older sister of four. I was also a certified therapeutic riding instructor, so I taught individuals with disabilities to ride horses. I love learning, and I love helping kids explore their world and do well in school.

I was a top student myself, and I have a B.A. in English with a minor in history. I attended graduate school for writing and editing. I currently work for the website of an Emmy Award-winning PBS equestrian travel program. I interview experts, write comprehensive pieces and edit quality articles.

My strongest knowledge area is English, though I can certainly handle all topics through the elementary school years. Social studies, history, and other liberal arts are subjects I can guide through high school and beyond.

I believe that learning is so much better and more effective when you enjoy the process. Just as I put context into every article I write, I strive to help students see where these facts came from and how this knowledge they're gaining fits into the world around us. School and learning can be hard work, but it's valuable work, and we can make it a lot of fun.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I did very well on the ACT English test, and I'm happy to help others prepare for the same success. The skills to do well on the ACT English test are the same skills I use every day.

I have a B.A. in English with a minor in history. I attended graduate school for writing and editing. I currently work for an equestrian travel television show, writing and editing quality articles for the website. I love to read, and I've tackled many classics in the years since I left school.

I help students see the value in the books they read, the writing they do and the English homework they're assigned. From analyzing a text to diagramming a sentence, these are skills that will help them in whatever field they choose.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a substitute teacher, and I also worked at a top early childhood education center for three years. Since I'm in a variety of classrooms during the week, I gather the best of what teachers and paraprofessionals are doing to help children learn. I think employing games and using a variety of methods can help make learning fun. I am very patient, and my goal is always to help students develop motivation from within.

Study Skills

In many years of school, both as a student through grad school and working in various schools, I've learned a lot about the myriad of study skills students can use to increase their success. I am a substitute teacher, and I also worked at a top early childhood education center for three years. I cover all grade levels. Since I'm in a variety of classrooms during the week, I gather the best of what teachers and paraprofessionals are doing to help students learn. I am very patient, and my goal is always to help students develop motivation from within. I help each individual student find what will work for their needs and preferences.
