About Carlos

As a medical student, I am very passionate about biology, but I am also passionate about helping others learn the wonders of the human body as well. I am a patient, kind, and thorough tutor who thrives on helping tutees understand, and better yet, enjoy biological topics. I have experience tutoring students in a wide range of subjects and ages--from tutoring for the MCAT as an undergraduate to training troops as a sergeant in the Army.

I took both genetics lecture and lab--and received A's in both--at UIC as an undergraduate. I also took medical genetics in my first year at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Genetics is an important topic in medicine, and it is on the standardized MCAT examination that I tutored for as well. I tutored on both Mendelian and molecular genetics at UIC and continue to do so for undergraduate students at MSU.

I am looking to continue to use my passion for teaching and for the biological sciences to provide excellent tutoring services for students who are struggling, or others who just wish for a deeper understanding of the topics they are interested in. The first consultation is always free, as much of the time spent will be assessing where the student stands, the topics needed to cover, and creating a learning plan. There is a style and pace of learning for everyone and I strive to ensure you have the correct one to suite your individual needs!

I have taken a wide range of science courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional school level including anatomy, physiology, pathology, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, histology, neurology, embryology, and more. I have also taken very specific graduate-lever courses such as research in microRNA that I can assist with. In addition, the coursework I have completed is always refreshed in my mind because I use it on a daily basis and love what I do.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have taken a full-year of gross anatomy at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a medical student, Anatomy knowledge is of the utmost importance. Medical anatomy is more in depth than undergraduate anatomy and I feel I am a subject matter expert.

Biology

I have taken all of the core 1st year medical school biology courses at the Michigan State University of Osteopathic Medicine and also taken a wide range of both undergraduate and graduate-level biology.

I have tutored biology as an undergraduate, for the MCAT, and in medical school.

The key to biology is to view the systems as a whole before moving onto specifics facts to memorize. If you understand how a system works first, then it makes memorizing a bunch of awkward names much easier, and much more fun.

Genetics

I took both genetics lecture and lab--and received A's in both--at UIC as an undergraduate. I also took medical genetics in my first year at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Genetics is an important topic in medicine, and it is on the standardized MCAT examination that I tutored for as well.

I tutored on both Mendelian and molecular genetics at UIC and continue to do so for undergraduate students at MSU.

Microbiology

In addition to taking medical microbiology at the Michigan State University of Osteopathic Medicine, I have also taken microbiology lecture and lab at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Aside from my coursework, I have also worked in an environmental analysis chemistry lab, where I routinely ran tests for coliform assays and spore identification air samples.

Physiology

In addition to taking physiology at the Michigan State University of Osteopathic Medicine, I have also taken homeostasis and physiology lecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I have tutored classmates in physiology, and although I have a great breadth of knowledge of all areas of physiology, I excel at the circulatory system and renal functions.
