About Carmella

I am a certified kindergarten through eighth grade teacher for the State of Michigan, and a certified kindergarten through sixth grade school teacher for the State of Tennessee. I have received professional and highly qualified teaching status, while working as a fifth grade teacher at Sevierville Intermediate School, a Title I school located in Sevierville, Tennessee.

My teaching experience has given me the necessary background to fulfill the jobs for which I am applying. During my first year at Sevierville Intermediate, I was the only fifth grade teacher, out of nine teachers, who did not team teach. After my first year of teaching I was assigned as a team teacher so that I could focus on my areas of strength; spelling, social studies, and particularly math. I was asked to come back to teach as solely a 5th grade math teacher at my school because my students standardized test scores were so high, but I moved to MI so I was unable to accept the position.

Classroom management is another area of strength that I exemplify. I prefer to use Whole Brain Teaching, which involves multiple steps of game like student responses, mirroring, and movements. It is important to embrace different learning styles, and through the use of Whole Brain Teaching, every learning style can be met. Many of these techniques have helped to earn me high scores on my evaluations.
All certified educators in the state of Tennessee are required, under the Tennessee’s first to the Top Act, to go through an evaluation process. The evaluation consists of multiple steps of observed measures to ensure that the teacher is providing the optimal education to students.

For all three years that I have been teaching I have received high scores. The state of Tennessee also gives standardized tests known as the Tennessee Comprehensive Department Assessment Program, or TCAPs, twice a year.

All of my students did well on all portions of the test and many received “advanced” scores. The last school year that I taught at Sevierville Intermediate, our school received the highest test scores in the county, particularly in math.

The county that I have taught was currently in the process of switching to Common Core State Standards. During the 2012-13 school year I began intermixing the Tennessee State Standards with Common Core State Standards. This meant that I had to prepare the students for the Constructive Response Assessment tests, which were given three times during the school year. These tests consisted of word problems where the students have to create several math algorithms. Additionally, students must be able to solve the algorithm correctly, explain in words how they solved it, and draw some sort of diagram, graph or picture, which explains the algorithm and the solution.

You can contact me anytime via phone or email. If you require any additional materials or information, please feel free to contact me, as I am happy to supply them to you. Thank you very much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Carmella

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
