About Renee

As an experienced elementary teacher I gained multiple principle awards for student test scores while working with academically disadvantaged students, and have done in-school work tutoring third and fourth graders in language/math and preparing them for the STAAR tests (Texas standardized testing). In Texas my certification is EC (early childhood) - grade 4 including English as a second language. As an educator one of the most exciting things I see is the "light go on" for students when they learn new concepts and master new skills, especially when they come from a place of being stuck or not believing they can do it. I'm also an experienced counselor, and I've taught writing/ESL in community college and adult education.

In order to help children reach their highest potential, I do several things. First I meet with parents and children. We talk about what's been happening at school and home, what's been done that works and what doesn't, and what everyone sees as student strengths and challenges. I want the student in the meeting because their perceptions of themselves, what they do well/struggle with is important. I believe for tutoring to work students must step up and own responsibility for trying their best to improve. My perception is: this project is a team effort. Students bring in their unique views/feelings, parents bring a deep understanding of/love for their child that no one else has, I bring my training and experience as an educator and counselor. Together we put in willingness, energy, and work. Once I have an initial meeting with the parent(s)/child, I make a plan and get busy. I use a variety of methods. I like to do short activities as much as possible (with all age levels) to keep students focused. If tasks are paper, I like to use visual things to help (like highlighting with different colors, graphic organizers to help process information, etc.). I also like to go beyond visual and bring in auditory (music), movement and touch. I really like to think outside the box and do creative things that will appeal to the student's interests and make her or him think for her or himself.

I follow a similar tutoring process with adults. The biggest differences would be I'd likely just meet with the student from the start, and I'd vary level of the activities so they were appropriate to the student of course.

Progress reports will be given regularly. If something isn't working, plans/curriculum are adjusted. I have a 24-hour cancellation notice, but will arrange make up lessons as much as possible. My fee for private lessons is $40 per hour, $35 per hour for semi-private, and $30 per hour for small groups of no bigger than three. I travel to student homes for lessons, or will meet at Starbucks (or another public place) if that's easier for you. Please see my profile for hours. If those will not work for you I may be able to arrange something else.

I really look forward to meeting you and seeing how I can help you excel!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I am a certified teacher (EC - 4/ESL in TX). I also have 8 years of full time and 2.5 years of part time teaching experience teaching there. My full time experience was in first and second grades where phonics was a lot of the reading instruction. My 2.5 years of part time was subbing, long-term subbing, and tutoring (including 3rd/4th/ESL/Bilingual). These students often needed extra phonics practice.

Reading

Reading is a complicated skill to learn and teach. It involves several sub skills: decoding, which involves phonics and understanding spelling patterns, and comprehension, which involves literal and abstract understanding of text (reading between the lines, drawing conclusions, etc.). Students must be able to read fluently in order to comprehend.

As far as teaching reading, I'm a certified teacher in TX (EC - 4) with 8 successful years of full time teaching experience and 2.5 of successful substituting and tutoring in a public school system. (I also have teaching certification in MI for EC - 8 and an M.A. in Counseling with experience. The counseling background comes in handy in analyzing problems and working with individuals and small groups.) Besides my standard professional training to prepare me to become a teacher/counselor, during my career so far I've completed lots of professional development sessions related to reading and language arts.

Study Skills

As a certified experienced elementary teacher and tutor giving students direct instruction in study skills was part of my job. In order to help them accomplish their work I had to often show them things like how to prioritize tasks and manage time, Some needed a variety of behavior choices to help them focus on work, and there were a variety of situations in which goal setting was used. Students, as they reached third and fourth grades, needed more direct instruction in guided reading and comprehension, test prep, and note taking. The most important thing to remember as an educator is students are individuals and different things work for each one, so have lots of options available!
