About Joyce

I have been teaching English for nearly half of my life. At age 20, I was approached with the opportunity to teach English as a Second Language while still working toward my Bachelor’s degree. I jumped at the chance and have always been grateful that my calling made itself heard while I was at such a young age. Over the years, I have taught ESL/EAPP, Composition, and Developmental English. Currently, I am teaching three sections of EAPP here at Macomb Community College and one Developmental section at Oakland Community College.

While our approaches to the standardization of our students’ work in the EAPP and Reading programs may vary, the ultimate goal is the same; we give our students the tools and techniques to help them become proficient speakers, readers, and writers in English. During my years as a Developmental English instructor, I have always implemented teaching techniques and strategies from my ESL/EAPP classes—with much success. Many Developmental students need to go back as close to square one as possible and relearn reading, writing, and even basic sentence structure, and I have had the opportunity to teach these subjects to international adult students who are absolute beginners.

Although my degree is in Linguistics, not Reading and Literacy, I have taken graduate-level Reading and Literacy classes. Furthermore, my experience working with both nontraditional and international students gives me keen insight into how while individuals learn differently, all benefit from an understanding of the underlying mechanics of the language. My approach to Developmental English is, at first, fundamental, formulaic, and analytical. From this, my students learn that English is not a subject comprised of ad hoc rules that vary from instructor to instructor. I make English logical, understandable, and even predictable for my students. It is from there that we can expand and work toward the more abstract, and sometimes creative, aspects of English, those of inferential reading and composition.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I hold a B.A. in English (with a minor in French and a concentration in Creative Writing) and an M.A. in Linguistics (with TESOL endorsement). I also speak Spanish.

Spanish

I am a linguist and lived in Spain for over 3 years. I also had family in Mexico and spent time there every year. I spoke Spanish with extended family members on a regular basis.

Because I am a linguist, I can teach you not only HOW to say phrases and sentences in Spanish, but also WHY we say them like we do! You will learn grammar, vocabulary, and tenses in a way you haven't learned them before!

Writing

I hold a B.A. in English (with a minor in French and a concentration in Creative Writing) and an M.A. in Linguistics (with TESOL endorsement). I also speak Spanish.
