Hello,

My name is Johonna, and I may be the right person to help you succeed!

I graduated from Southern Utah University with a B.S. in Biology, a B.I.S. in Agriculture Science and a minor in Chemistry. During my time at SUU I was a mentor/tutor for a program called SANS. Working with this program I gained experience tutoring in a variety of different subjects, learning about what approaches to learning work for different people, and understanding the difficulties that a lot of students face. I also spent multiple semesters being a grader for Chemistry classes where I learned what type of answers teachers are looking for and how to locate the root of students' problems.

For three years I worked at a private school teaching math and science classes. This allowed me the opportunity to become familiar with the California State Standards for numerous courses as well as finding out the best ways to teach them to students!

I really enjoy using multiple different methods when tutoring. This might include diagrams on a whiteboard, oral questions to ensure understanding and, when applicable, using bodily kinesthetics to help visualize a concept. I have used all these methods previously and have enjoyed seeing which methods work for different students.

Look forward to hearing from you!

My time as a university student as well as my time being a tutor/academic mentor has given me insight into what study techniques work for different people. I often find that when tutoring the main issue is that the student doesn't know the most efficient and effective way to study. Every person is different. Usually, the first time meeting with a student I would run through a variety of techniques to see what works.

Algebra is the beginnings of unknowns! It includes figuring out how to distribute, simplify and solve problems with unknown variables.
Biology,

Biology

Biology is the study of life. In fact, when learning about biology you can directly see real life applications. However, for most students the difficulty is tying all the information together. By helping to put the pieces of the puzzle together I am confident that it will increase your enjoyment (or at least appreciation) for the biological sciences.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I often tell people who are taking chemistry that it is like rolling together a math, science, and foreign language class. It's tough! The biggest problem I have seen is students not taking the time to understand the fundamentals. Once the fundamentals are understood then chemistry can be very straight forward.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I can't stress enough how important pre-algebra is. It sets the stage for all the future math you will be doing. Don't let you/your child get behind in this class! It has the potential to make math a positive experience if learned right!

Knowledgeable , patient tutor makes great use of the time.

Joey helped my daughter with her accelerated biology class. She possibly is the best tutor we've ever had. She is very thorough in her explanations and checks in to make sure my daughter is comprehending before continuing on. I really appreciated her coming prepared for the subject even bringing her own material.

Highly Recommended

My child was a freshman in high school struggling with Biology. She was lucky enough to have Johonna as her tutor for the second semester and the difference was amazing. My daughter went from struggling to maintain a "C" to a strong "B". Johonna connected well with my daughter, made learning fun, was always prompt and on time. I would highly recommend Johonna.

Johonna works very well with my teenager.

He requires someone with patience and who he feels comfortable with. He is struggling in Chemistry and since working with Johonna for the past few weeks his grade is improving and his overall attitude toward the subject has gone from total hopelessness to optimism.

Awesome ACT Tutor!

Johonna helped my daughter prepare for taking the ACT test. She has developed her own customizable tutoring tools and was able to really help my daughter focus on the areas where she needed help. Because of Johonna's help my daughters score went from 26 (just average) to 31 (top 97% in the Nation) on the actual test. Thank you, Johanna! I can not tell you how many more college and scholarship opportunities have opened up to my daughter because of your help!

Excellent tutor.

Joey is a wonderful AP Biology tutor. She takes time to meaningfully guide my daughter to truly understand and effectively apply the concepts that are being reviewed. She explains difficult and complex issues in a seamless manner and is very comprehensive with the subject matter. Joey also has terrific communication skills and using these skills, she has been the perfect tutor for my daughter.

Multi talented tutor.

With two teenagers struggling in two different subjects, Johonna is a one stop super tutor! Flexible and reliable. She meets one child at the local library and the other in our home. Always on time! Always comes prepared with materials to make full use of their hour together. It was wonderful to have my 16 year old come home and say for the 1st time-"Today Chemistry was fun." Understanding the material better has lowered the stress level and is allowing some enjoyment of the subject. Hoping to continue our tutoring through the end of the year and on.
