About Carianne

I have studied English intensively for the past ten years and now hold a Bachelor's degree in the subject. I have tutored ESL students from Venezuela, Kurdistan, China, and Spain, as well as native speakers, in improving various areas of the English language. While my primary focus is writing, proofreading, and grammar, I am also proficient in reading and mathematics, which has enabled me to tutor many students in comprehensive preparation for the TOEFL and ACT.

My first step when beginning lessons with a student is to evaluate his or her level of understanding. I formulate lessons that focus on the student’s specific needs in order to ensure that our time together is productive and inspires growth. If something is too easy or too difficult, I adjust the lesson accordingly. I use a variety of methods and materials to keep students engaged and to convey information in ways that are relevant to real life. I make a point to be patient and encouraging rather than critical, as fear of mistakes inhibits learning. I care about my students’ success and am always looking for ways to be a more effective tutor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with students from various countries in improving all areas of the English language. My independent study of Spanish, undergraduate French minor, and travel to both Spanish- and French- speaking countries has helped me to relate more effectively to foreign students. I love languages and am gratified when communication with a foreign student doubles as language practice.

French

I studied French for five years, completed a French minor at Hope College, and spent a semester in Aix-en-Provence, France learning about the language and culture. I am most experienced in grammar and can assist beginning students with all areas of French.

Proofreading

Because I love grammar, I am an instinctive proofreader. I cannot read a book without looking for errors. In college, I was literary editor of the NMC magazine, staff member of Hope College’s Opus, and a copy editor at the Hope College Anchor. My editing experience extends to essays and website content.

SAT Writing

I hold a BA in English with specific emphasis on writing. I have worked with many students in improving their writing skills, particularly with essays and test preparation.
