About Charley

I started my professional life as a lawyer, which I did successfully for 25 years. Then after my children went off to college, I decided I wanted to spice up my life and joined the Peace Corps. I learned that my destination would be Morocco and that I would be teaching English to high school students and young adults. To better prepare me for my upcoming adventure (and knowing I had a year before departing for Morocco), I enrolled in the TEFL program at University of California San Diego and completed the courses necessary to obtain certification. During that time, I tutored many South Korean and Japanese students who were also taking TEFL program courses. I also found time to study Arabic, knowing that I would need it in the months ahead.

Then off to Morocco for 27 months! I lived in a small community for two years, teaching English, but also learning so, so much of the culture and language. While there, I met and married a wonderful Moroccan girl, and decided to stay in Morocco after my 27 month Peace Corps tour came to a close. I continued to teach English to Moroccan students and even started my own small English language school.

Now we are preparing to move back to the States and settle in San Diego. Teaching English to non-native English speakers has been interesting and fun and I look forward to continuing that work in San Diego.

Of course, having the certification and the teaching experience certainly helps, but that it not really what sets me apart. I am lively and energetic. It is important to me to engage the students and make them want to learn; to challenge them in fun and unique ways. I teach because I want my students to learn, not just because its my job. After all, I was a volunteer for over two years, living off of about $250 per month.

If you're as passionate about learning as I am about teaching, contact me and let's get started :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have a TEFL Certificate from the University of California San Diego and have five years' teaching and tutoring experience here in the United States and in Morocco.

I enjoy tutoring, get along well with people, and have an easy disposition.
