About Elrico

Currently I attend American Public University working on my Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a concentration in Political Theory. I am also working toward a marketing minor. I work for one of the local school school districts overseeing the technology and offering support for computer software programs like Microsoft Office, Prezi and finding support materials for grades K-12 to support core curriculum teachers. Prior to that, I worked as a teacher's aide in the high school special ed classrooms and the Pre-Kindergarten classes. I have been active in youth development programs all of my life, and teach leadership skills, career readiness, life and wilderness skills, as well as civic responsibility.

I am a former elected official. I ran for my first seat at the age of 18, and by 22 I was elected to serve on the local school board. I have written policy at the local, state and federal levels relating to education and civil rights issues.

My philosophy of working with students is simple. Upon our first meeting, the parent(s), student and I will meet to discuss the objectives. We will discuss what strategies do and do not work with the student, and from there we become a team, ensuring the success of your student. My goal, my WHY, is the joy I feel when the light bulb turns on, and our student realizes he/she now understands and gets it. I look forward to hearing from you. I am typically available in the evenings and afternoons every day except for Tuesdays.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Government & Politics

A disinterest in politics is something our society cannot allow. In order to understand why our elected leadership acts in the manner they do, we have to understand the structures of government, how their powers are obtained (and how can they be limited),
We will look at the structures of government comparatively, to provide a broader context of how the process works.

As a civil rights advocate in our community, and as a former elected official and lobbyist, I have first hand knowledge of the intricacy of how our government really works. From the legislator taking an idea and beginning to make the concept become a bill, to the lobbyists attempting to persuade the legislator to their position, to the inner working of a committee hashing out the bill to take to the whole floor, and there it goes. The framers of the American style of politics wanted to ensure that not one person or political body had complete control, so understanding how the relationship of the legislative, judicial and executive branches at the federal and state levels are is key.

Because of how amazing and interesting this subject is to me, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Taking this real-world knowledge, I bring to life the academics of political science making politics relevant to all that I work with. I am also an approved tutor for Political Science.

Public Speaking

I have presented to small to large groups in various settings since 1996. As a public servant, one of my duties was to advocate in one-on-one settings as well as large groups for my constituency. I have written many speeches for non-profit leadership that I have worked with in the past. Public Speaking is a fear that many have. The key to overcoming public speaking is remembering that are the authority on your speech. No one knows what you are going to say and how you will deliver it.
