About Cullen

Hello, my name is Cullen I. I will begin attending The University of Alabama this fall on a full academic scholarship. I will major in Mechanical Engineering, while also working towards my MBA. I earned ACT scores of 35 in reading, 34 in both science and English, 10 (equivalent to a 33) on the writing portion, and 30 in math. My hobbies include biking, fantasy football, and swimming. I'm a huge fan of professional and college football, as well as college basketball.

While I don't have much formal tutoring experience, I've engaged in a variety of informal tutoring sessions. Since I take many advanced placement courses, my friends know I have the knowledge to aid them when they are struggling. I also often help my brother, who suffers from dyslexia and ADHD, with his homework. I have experience training new hires in a retail atmosphere, often 1-on-1, on the complicated flow of the store. These experiences have taught me how to teach, how to be patient, and how to push students to reach greater heights. I truly enjoy watching my students need my help less and less, as they learn and develop. I know I have done my job right when my students no longer require my assistance. There are many advantages to having a student work with you or your child, as opposed to a teacher. Being closer to your child's age allows me to seem as less like an authority figure, and more like a helpful peer. This distinction will allow children to be more receptive to my tips and teachings. Also, a younger tutor will help your child feel less of the unfortunate embarrassment that normally comes with seeing a tutor.

Early in my education, my parents stressed a strong base in mathematics. This meant everything from taking advanced courses while still in elementary school, to bringing a Twist and Shout Multiplication 'toy' on vacation. This strong base allowed me to earn a national award from the Continental Mathematics League, win a math meet, and earn A's in both Prealgebra and Algebra, all before the start of high school. Now graduating high school, I employ this strong base my parents provided me in advanced courses. Even in advanced courses, such as Calculus 3, my strong base of early math skills aids me tremendously. I understand how important these basic classes are to your child's future, and I know I can create that base with them. I would be very able to help children with certain subjects or lessons that they are struggling with. I can give them the confidence to not only succeed now, but in the future as well.

I've always believed that the ability to write professionally and articulately is a vital skill of any professional. Even in a mathematics focused career path, such as the one I intend to take, intelligent writing is still extremely important. I could know every calculus formula and every chemical compound, but if my resume is filled will improper grammar and misspellings, I'm going to come off as an idiot. With this in mind, I prepared myself for the future by only taking honors or AP English courses throughout high school. These classes not only prepared me for college level writing, but surrounded me with other talented writers. My friends have often called upon me to proofread their writing, as they always learn from it and see a large improvement in their grade. This is because when I proofread, I don't simply point out misspellings or grammar. I help them understand how to create a better paper overall, though many tips and tricks. These experiences with fellow students have made me extremely comfortable with my proofreading process. I know some parents may be wary of hiring a student to help their child, but this course of action carries many benefits. I understand how to write a paper for a class. I understand how to dissect every aspect of a quote. I understand how to naturally infuse literary devices, such as the one I'm currently employing. I understand how to cater my writing to the audience, which is the most important aspect of writing for a grade or acceptance. I can help students write a great paper, be creative, all while falling within the requirements. I've done it for years, and have gotten quite good at it. No matter if it's brainstorming, proofreading, or simply writers block, I'm confident in my ability to help out.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I will respond in less than 24 hours to any messages I receive.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I've been an avid chess player since the third grade. I've taught many people of many different ages how to play the game, and am confident I can teach anyone. I often begin by playing a noncompetitive game of chess, teaching the rules as the game progresses. This allows students to be active and engaged in the game. I continue to play multiple games in this noncompetitive way until the student has a good grasp upon the rules of chess. We then engage in more serious matches, to help develop a strategy. We continue playing these serious matches until the student is beating me every other game, or more, proving they have a great understanding of the game.

Cullen is great. — I've only worked with Cullen for a few sessions but I must say that I'm "Impressed" with his patience and understanding of the material. He's knowledgeable and was able to make me understand concepts that I'd never grasped before. I look forward to Cullen helping me more and I recommend him to anyone needing a good math tutor. ...
