About Maria

I graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors College distinction from the University of South Florida, in 2014. I have seven years’ worth of tutoring experience. I have tutored students, at differing abilities and intensities, in Algebra, English, and Latin. I view learning as an accumulative experience. In my sessions, I would have two goals: one, to explain concepts and, two, to provide moments for the students to use this acquired knowledge. I believe that variability in information presentation is important to the overall success of learning. Therefore, I use various methods to convey the same information. My second goal follows closely: I would offer opportunities for students to use what they have learned. Giving them occasion to find the answer before I intercede, helps students realize where their strengths and shortcomings are. Through a careful balance of teaching and homework, the student’s ability will increase. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors College distinction from the University of South Florida, in 2014. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have completed a B.A. degree. In pursuit of this degree, I took above the required math credits. I have completed Algebra 1. I will help students understand math by showing the steps. Also, I will help them understand what to study, so they can solve the math equations on their own.

Elementary Math

I took above the required math credits. Understanding elementary math forms the foundation for all higher math; thus, I am dedicated to firming this foundation for the student.

European History

In college I completed Ancient History, Medieval History, and American History I and II. My course work as a humanist included history, since knowing our past is crucial to understanding the context of any piece of fine art. My passion for history extends past my academic pursuits and exudes in me. I want to share this passion and knowledge of history with middle and high school level students.

I will help my students by guiding them to form excellent study guides and helping them to think about historical events in ways that makes sense to them. My goal is to help them connect with the material enough that they can feel confident to study and remember it on their own.

Latin

I have tutored Latin for several years and received awards for my own proficiency. I began to learn Latin in middle school, and I was even a member of the Junior Classical League. In College, while I pursued my degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies, I took every Latin education opportunity available to me, including supervised reading and translation work in my undergraduate thesis. I have fulfilled courses through Medieval Latin, which was at the graduate school level. I received an award in Latin Excellence this past Winter semester, at my graduate school.

Literature

I graduated with a degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies. I critically analyzed historical fine art. I focused particularly on literature. I performed close readings and comparative analysis. The skills I honed in college I want to carry over into helping young students understand and appreciate the literary works they read for school.

I will help students by guiding them to see the significant parts of their readings, to form critical questions to stimulate their thinking, and to write in an educated manner about their readings.

Prealgebra

I have completed a B.A. degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies. In pursuit of this degree, I took above the required math credits. I have completed the following college math courses, all with an A:
-Intermediate Algebra
-College Algebra
-Statistics
-Pre-Calculus

I have a passion for helping students understand math and perform well in the subject. I have tutored four students in differing levels of college math before with great results.

I will help students understand math by showing the steps. Also, I will help them understand what to study, so they can solve the math equations on their own. Understanding prealgebra forms the foundation for all higher algebra courses; thus, I am dedicated to firming this foundation for the student.

Public Speaking

My experience with Public Speaking is three fold:

First, I was a part of a Speech and Debate Organization for two years, Middle through High School, called National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA). During this time I participated in educational opportunities through twice-yearly conferences.

Second, while in college I successfully completed Introduction to Public Speaking.

Third, I have spoken publicly on a number of occasions. I have given a speech at my church, at my high school graduation, and in college. I also spoke at the ground breaking ceremony of my local YMCA.

I want to share all of this experience with students who may struggle both to find what to say or how to say it when preparing for a public speech. Helping the student find their voice and inner confidence will be my main goals to help them perform in public or in a classroom well.

Study Skills

I graduated with a degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies. I began college at the young age of 14, and achieved Summa Cum Laude honor upon completion. I studied math, history, literature, and languages (Latin and French) intensely. I have also taken formal classes in college success skills. Study skills lie in organization and motivation. Often the key to success is the proper infrastructure of balanced schedule, ability to write study guides, pursuit of beneficial practice tests, and self-confidence.

Vocabulary

I graduated with a degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies. I critically analyzed historical fine art. I focused particularly on literature. This study and college more generally introduced me to a healthy amount of advanced vocabulary. The ability to speak and write with a sophisticated vocabulary is instrumental not only to my academic pursuits but also my desire to be an eloquent person.

I have completed both Latin and French foreign language courses, which help me to detect derivatives, prefixes, and suffixes. The derivatives, prefixes, and suffixes of words aid students to understand the meaning of those words.

I will help students with their vocabulary by creating ways for them to remember the word -- such as word association -- and understand the important elements of the word that help convey what it means -- such as prefixes and suffixes.

World History

In college, I completed these general history course: Ancient History, Medieval History, American History I and II, Asian History on Film, and Theory of History. My course work as a humanist included history, since knowing our past is crucial to understanding the context of any piece of fine art. In Humanities, I finished courses in such subjects as Christian Church History, 17th century history, and Chinese History. I purposefully took a wide global view in my historical studies.

Writing

I graduated with a degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies, which was writing intensive. Since then, I have published an article in a national academic journal. Writing is more than words, the ability to present arguments and clearly convey them is fundamental to successful writing. I would help the student learn methods of creating topic ideas, organizing thoughts, and explaining concepts. Once the writing sample is completed, the follow up lessons would involve grammar accuracy, sentence clarity, and word brevity.
