About Hayden

I am the head debate coach at a local high school. I have coached many students to win multiple state championships. Coaching debate and teaching argumentation informs my teaching philosophy.

My belief is that students learn best when interested and engaged in their material as well as when comfortable to express what they are thinking about such material. If you're considering me as a tutor, I would say to ask yourself if motivation, engagement, interest and/or fear of expression are the problem areas that your child is struggling with.

I am a magna cum laude graduate from Kalamazoo College. My major was philosophy with a concentration in critical theory. My sophomore year at K I won the department of philosophy prize and my senior year I won the Hodge memorial prize in philosophy, given to the student with highest standing in the department. I have worked with students on college-level writing and idea expression at both Kalamazoo College and Normandale Community College in Minneapolis.

I have also worked with adults preparing for the GED test in English, math and social sciences at Goodwill of SW Michigan.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I am the head debate coach at Portage Northern high school in Portage, Michigan. I have coached high school debate for 2 years now and have been involved in debate for 5 years. I am also the founder/executive director of the Kalamazoo Urban Debate League 501(c) 3, a non-profit organization aimed at providing the Kalamazoo region with a locally accessible alternative to the traditional travel debate season. My public speaking experience also extends to giving conference presentations on advanced philosophical work.

Social Studies

I coach high school policy format debate. As policy format debate is expected to be a simulation of the governmental policy making procedure I have a working understanding of many aspects of social studies. Though my major in college was philosophy, I have spent a good deal of time working with how philosophy changes over time. Studying these shifts leads one from the ideas to their utilization in the world.

Relevant college courses: Theories of Society and Culture, Socialisms and Capitalisms, Intro to Anthropology, Native American Literatures, 19th Century Philosophy, Global Ethics and General Psychology.

Also, I used to joke that I graduated high school with a major in social studies. In high school I took and passed the following social studies AP tests with fives and fours: AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, AP US Government and AP Comparative Government.

Study Skills

As a high school debate coach, I spend a lot of time instructing students to properly organize the information they will utilize in debate. I consistently work with students on finding effective methods of note-taking. A lot of my time is spent teaching students to better dissect the main points of articles, books and arguments so they may be utilized as supporting evidence. Most importantly, I work with my students to develop lasting study habits and approaches to school work.
