Grand Valley State University (Elementary education)
I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelors of Science and a Elementary minor. Upon graduation I was not able to find a teaching position out of college. I did however, spend a few years as a substitute teacher. I started a new career path when I got hired to work for the State of Michigan as an eligibility specialist. It was during this experience I was able to combine my teaching knowledge with my life skills coaching passion to help reach older members of the community. I'm really excited to get back into teaching.
I have two daughters ages seven and four. Helping my oldest with homework has sparked my interest to get back into teaching. I have spent countless hours reading books before bedtime and I have seen how much this has helped both of them in their reading skills. My oldest daughter is a first grader who is reading at a 2nd grade or higher level and excels at math and writing as well. I wouldn't credit all her success to my teachings because she is a very dedicated and hard worker! If you select me to help tutor you I would expect the same out of you as a student. Dedicate yourself to learning the subjects you need help with and work hard to achieve your goals.
I had to take several college level classes to earn my degree. I believe in playing games that require critical thinking in regards to counting and problem solving. By using flash cards and learning sight words is the bases of establishing quality reading skills. Then practice, practice, practice.
I am qualified k-5 all subjects and 6-8th grade social studies. I enjoy working one on one with individuals and helping them achieve their goals. My favorite subjects are math and social studies. However, reading and writing have become more of a passion for me in recent years. I believe in building self confidence in individuals. Once they have achieved self confidence, they become self motivated to work towards their goals. Once these two attributes have been developed. I believe an individual can achieve things beyond their original goals.
I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to achieve your education goals. I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelors of Science and a Elementary minor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
