About Christopher

Simply put - I live by language. I am responsible weekly to research and prepare a message making complex passages of Scripture understandable to an age range between 5-70. It requires me to not only understand how language works together in terms of how it sounds, what images it draws from, but have sufficiently clear internal logic that even a kindergartener can get a basic grasp of it. Because of time restraints, I have to be economical in the language I use - brevity is indeed the soul of wit and wisdom.

I have served in the capacity of an English tutor for college students, for high school students, for middle school students. As a father of four I review the language arts homework of my children (middle school and elementary age). I am both trained and experienced in oral communication. I have mentored two young men into the ministry, often critiquing their written and oral communications. As part of my responsibilities I also develop and execute lessons, instructing people in their responses to their Creator.

My teaching method is based upon a coaching model. I come alongside a student and prompt through questioning to help them grow in their grasp of the material. In oral communications I stress authenticity and developing a delivery that is compatible with the person. I literature I stress the original context in which the piece was written, the internal context of the literature itself and the original intent of the author. Typically, if you understand those three things an understanding of the literature itself becomes much more obtainable.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been trained by leading experts in the field of Biblical theology while attending Calvin Theological Seminary. My training has been augmented by twelve years of practical experience as a pastor in a local church. My method is simple: know the author, know the history, know the text.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am the father of four children, ages 5-12 years old and am often called on to tutor my own children. I have two semesters of an education program, including a practicum. My job requires I be able to teach complex, abstract concepts on a preschool level. I am also married to a 1st grade teacher and so have been exposed to different curricula and modalities. I also have a resident expert at my disposal.

Public Speaking

After twelve years of experience in the pulpit of a local church I have garnered significant experience as a public speaker. I have spoken to a variety of audiences in a variety of venues on a variety of topics. Throughout my education and career, my public speaking efforts have been critiqued by experts to ensure the quality of my material and presentation.

My training in public speaking came under Martin Dekkinga at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. Additionally, I was a member of the West Virginia Wesleyan Forensics Team competing in the impromptu, extemporaneous and after dinner speech events. I gained further training through seminary courses on preaching. My instructors at Calvin Theolgical Seminary include Dr. David Schurringa, Jack Roeda, and Dr. Sydney Greidanus.

As part of my responsibilities in ministry I am required to critique the public speaking of interns in preparation for working in ministry. I have personally interned two young men into ministry and so have has opportunity to exercise this responsibility.

My philosophy of public speaking focuses on clear structure and authenticity. If a person rambles, though s/he says something great, it gets lost because the hearer has to sort through so much extraneous information the point is blunted. If a person offers a brilliant message, but appears so mechanical or forced, the hearer is turned away because s/he feels s/he is being manipulated.

As a trained theologian, I am equipped to research, understand and comment on a variety of religious issues. Part of my responsibility as a pastor is to critique religious movements and guard the people under my care from false or damaging religious systems. In both my graduate and personal studies I have spent a great deal of time defining and exploring worldviews and how they shape our view of reality.

My field of endeavor requires me to be an effective speech communicator. As the pastor of a local church I am tasked weekly to take the words penned by men two-thousand years ago and recast them in contemporary language in a way that is faithful to the original message. The message I present is also required to be relevant to lives of my hearers in spite of originating in antiquity through a different culture and in different languages.

While a college student, I participated in the forensic team - which engaged in speech competitions. I competed in impromtu, extemporaneous, and after dinner speech events. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels of my educatin I was required to complete classes in speech communication - including instruction on the hearers responsibility for speech communication.

My instruction in speech communication focuses on clear organization in the speech and the authenticity of the speaker. Hearers do not trust, and therefore are much less likely to listen, to a person who tries to be someone they are not. Additionally, hearers tend to tune out if they think the speech os going nowhere - organization is a must.
