I took my first Accounting course for the same reason that most students do so, because it was required. I began somewhat in toleration mode but obviously became more enthusiastic during my years of study. I have come to view Accounting as the nervous system of the business, gathering information to help define the future course of action. The best doctors must be both technically competent and have good interpersonal skills. A similar balance must be present for a manager to be effective. Small businesses thrive because the entrepreneur has such a balance. Quite commonly good ideas fail, not for lack of merit, but because there is limited business sense. In this context, Accounting is not an option, it is essential.

While I take pride in the fact that several students have told me that, because of my class, they have decided upon Accounting as a career, I realize that I am teaching mostly to those who will not do so. I make efforts to build confidence in those who may have been intimidated by stories about the difficulty of the subject. Business Law is also taught from the standpoint of influencing business decisions, not litigating and winning cases. They are expensive and have an uncertain outcome. So, Business Law is much less dramatic than the law shows on television because a good business lawyer doesn't win cases; he or she avoids them to the extent possible.

With 40 years of experience, I have developed many ways of making the same point until I find the best fit for the students. One example very early in Principles I, is to compare the Income Statement (temporary accounts) with the season and the Balance Sheet (permanent accounts) with the team record. Later, in both Principles I and II, when we get to financial analysis, I compare that to a physical. Both produce quantitative data which can yield warning signs and influence subsequent decisions.
